Dawgs Abroad Day 10: Maribor Adventures
June 22, 2017 | Volleyball
From June 11 until June 24, Washington Volleyball is in search of competition and culture in four different countries in Europe. The Huskies are on their first foreign adventure since 2013, joined by many family members and donors, to share in a once in a lifetime experience outside of their comfort zones. Arriving inย Milan, Italy on June 12, the Dawgsย have visited Lake Como andย Venice before leaving Italy for Croatia (Umag and Rovinj) and then on to Slovenia (Ljubljana, Maribor and Bled) with an additional side trip to Graz, Austria, returning to Seattle on June 24. During the trip, the Huskies are scheduled to play seven matches against a mixture of senior national teams, junior national teams, and professional club teams.
While abroad, Husky players will be blogging about their experiences each day here on GoHuskies.com.

Redshirt freshman outside hitter Maria Bogomolova recaps a bike ride into downtown Maribor and a trip to Doppler Vineyards.
09:04: We just had instructions how to ride a bike. Everyone is very exited to go and get backย safely.ย Europe is trying to popularize biking, some people even do not have a car because they are trying to make the air cleaner and traffic is too bad because of tourists. Someone's chain fell off and we waited for our guide to fix it. Everyone is thinking that it is Keegan, because he went too fast. No, not Keegan... Jamie-Rose Winder.
Passing by the river on the bike was incredibly great. The view that opens up under the bridge and the horizon is very pretty. We didn't encounter that many people, it felt like the city was empty and it created an atmosphere of calmness and peace. Walking or skating (be careful, kids!) around was my favorite thing to do in Seattle, you can't imagine how cool it was to have an opportunity to do it here. Usually people imagine a pretty woman in a long flowery dress, on a red bike with a basket on it and a puppy inside, she is riding down the river and smiles. That picture you might imagine when you hear "biking" in Europe. Incredibly romantic and beautiful. Here we had a huge group of Americans apart from two, who rode around so fast, as if someone was chasing them. "No brakes" was our motto yesterday on the alpine slide and I think today it is going to be the phrase of the day as well! We stopped near the oldest living grape vine, It is in the book of Guinness world records! Very old! Very pretty!
10:36: Lauren and I are sitting in the nice coffee shop, drinking our coffee and laughing about my spelling.
11:28: Right after a coffee break Lauren and I had a little adventure. I used to send a postcard to my close people from America from each city I have been. I thought it is kind of interesting to receive a card from different places. For me postcards are playing an important role in my life. I had a collection with my mom and we send each other postcards wherever we are and knowing that you are expecting a card is like expecting a present for New Year's. Always exciting and it is a great opportunity to get to know the city. Lauren and I went for a small voyage to find a post office. During that little trip we got a little bit confused and lost, people didn't know where the post office is and all of them pointed in different directions. Personally, it is upsetting that we got used to technologies so much that we don't send each other actual letters. Maybe I am just too sentimental and a little bit old fashioned, but it was surprising for me. We ended up searching for a post office in Google maps and I caught myself thinking that if I did not have a SIM card and internet, I wouldn't send a postcard at all and I would fail my little mission.
11:45: Coffee break before long trip on the bike. I think it was weird that for the entire trip we had no rain. Today, when we decided to ride a bike to another part of the city... rain came. It was not that hard, but we laughed that we miss Seattle with its rain. You don't appreciate the rain, until you will be in an incredibly hot place. So we were glad that the rain helped us to stay cool during that trip. When we arrived in the hotel, we had a lunch in the restaurant and all of us went to our rooms. Pregame time started. Some girls take a nap, some don't. Some girls drink coffee before the game, some don't. We are all different, but I will tell you about my pregame routine. I take a nap. I need to take a nap and get my brain together. After it is necessary to listen to good music and make sure that I have a little bit of make-up on. Pretty much it. Very simple and easy :)

21:54: We are sitting at the winery and I simply have no words to describe how beautiful it is, how great is the view and how much fun we have together. I love these moments with the team when we have a time to talk during the dinner, discuss our "Low-High" moments of the day and just talk about everything. Shayne and Kara are playing with Lanea and Day Day (Tui's kids), they are pretending that they are playing basketball. Tia is drawing on the wall the sign of Seattle - the Space Needle - I am amazed how she can draw. Destiny and Lauren are sitting near me and they are talking about our trip. Crissy is talking with Keegan's father, Carly is with Krista. Courtney and Jade are filming how Tia is drawing. Avie is having a great time with one of our family members and I just feel like we are a huge family. No words to describe how happy I am at that moment, knowing that all of us are having a great time, all of us are loved and all of us enjoying the moments that we have together. A feeling of unity, a feeling of freedom, a feeling of happiness and warmth.
I'm so grateful that I am a part of this great family. I'm so happy that I had a chance to get to know these people. I'm so happy that we are getting closer.
Match 6 vs. Russian U16 National Team
In their second match in Maribor, the Huskies took on a very young but talented Russian U16 National Team. The Dawgs won the first three sets, then the teams continued on for two more full sets, with the Huskies winning four of the five total sets, 25-19, 25-18, 25-19, 20-25, 25-10.
ย
The Huskies had a balanced offensive attack with seven different players posting five or more kills, led by 17 kills for Kara Bajema. Middle blockers Lauren Sanders and Avie Niece both finished with 12 kills apiece, while Tia Scambray had eight kills, Destiny Julye had seven, Crissy Jones had six, and Maria Bogomolova had five. Jade Finau tallied 56 assists and Courtney Schwan racked up five aces.
ย
The Huskies started a bit slow in the first set and made a handful of errors after the previous matches had been very clean. Down a couple of points for most of the set, the Huskies made a late push, going on a 4-0 run to force both Russia timeouts at 19-17 and at 21-17, with Jade Finau and Lauren Sanders getting stuff blocks during the run. Tia Scambray, starting at outside hitter, hit one up the line past the block for set point at 24-19 and the Dawgs closed it out on the next point.
ย
Washington opened the second set with two straight kills from overpasses off the serve of Cailin Onosko. Avie Niece then finished off two straight points for a 4-1 lead. Scambray served an ace for 7-5. Maria Bogomolova got her first kill against her compatriots to make it 9-6 Huskies, and a couple points later Sanders killed an overpass for 12-6 to force a Russia timeout. Scambray dove to cover a Russia block and then Finau set Bogomolova for another kill, and later an ace from Courtney Schwan made it 18-11. Russia made a run but Scambray ended it with a crosscourt kill from the right pin for 21-17, and then Niece finished another and Russia made a net error to get to 23-17. Scambray served another ace to reach set point and Niece got another to fall to end it, 25-18.
ย
Scambray moved to libero to start the third set, and on the first point she poked over a third touch and it fell for a kill. Kara Bajema was in at outside hitter and immediately hit straight down for a kill and then had a block that made it 4-2 Huskies. The teams swapped points, with a slide kill from Sanders for 9-7. UW pushed ahead to 13-8 on a Bajema slam followed by another roof from the sophomore. Niece and Bajema teamed for a block for 16-9. Russia fought back with four in a row but Destiny Julye ended that run with a kill for 18-15. Another kill from Sanders on a slide from Finau made it 22-17, and Bajema helped close it out with another late kill, winning 25-19.
ย
The fourth set saw the Russians come out hot and take a 5-1 lead, but the Huskies got back even at 6-6, but could not grab a lead. A crosscourt swing from Bajema made it 9-10, and Finau dropped in an ace to make it 12-15, but for the first time the Huskies couldn't get a long serving run going. Bogomolova hit a rocket for 16-20 and then Julye had a kill off a Russia overpass from a Jones serve for 17-20, but the Dawgs wouldn't get closer, as Russia got the set, 25-20.
ย
Washington quickly picked it back up in the fifth set, jumping out to a 3-0 and a 6-1 lead including an ace from Julye and another Bajema blast. Sanders put down a quick set from Finau for a 9-6 lead, then UW broke it open with three straight aces from Schwan to make it 13-7 and force a Russia timeout. Finau got up for a kill on an overpass to keep the run going to 15-7. Another ace for Julye pushed the lead to 19-8, and then Niece had a solo stuff block for 21-8. Washington quickly ended it, 25-10, on a block assist from Jones and Niece.
