Dawgs Abroad Day 8: Up And Down Mountains
June 20, 2017 | Volleyball
From June 11 until June 24, Washington Volleyball is in search of competition and culture in four different countries in Europe. The Huskies are on their first foreign adventure since 2013, joined by many family members and donors, to share in a once in a lifetime experience outside of their comfort zones. Arriving in Milan, Italy on June 12, the Dawgs have visited Lake Como and Venice before leaving Italy for Croatia (Umag and Rovinj) and then on to Slovenia (Ljubljana, Maribor and Bled) with an additional side trip to Graz, Austria, returning to Seattle on June 24. During the trip, the Huskies are scheduled to play seven matches against a mixture of senior national teams, junior national teams, and professional club teams.
While abroad, Husky players will be blogging about their experiences each day here on GoHuskies.com.

Sophomore libero Cailin Onosko recaps a day spent on a mountain in Maribor
What's up, Dawg fans!!!
I cannot believe day eight of our trip is already over! But wow it was a very eventful day!
We started the day with individual film sessions. Each player was assigned a time between 9-10 am to sit down with a coach one on one and watch film on our last couple matches. We also got to enjoy a nice breakfast buffet. The espresso machine and croissants were definitely on point. After four shots of espresso it was time for practice! We had a short two minute walk to a gym facility in the hotel right below ours. There, we grinded out a very efficient one-hour serve and pass practice.
Then we had 20 minutes to get back, shower and prepare ourselves for the famous Slovenian Alpine Slide. We first took a chair lift up the mountain. Some of the coaches decided to hike it..... let's just say they were very sweaty and out of breath when they reached the top. We then got to enjoy a yummy lunch with a great view of the city of Maribor.
I really wish I could put into words the thrilling experience of the Alpine Slide! You sit in this little yellow cart connected to a track that swerves down a steep little mountain. You can control your speed the whole time with a brake lever. Of course it became a competition of who would use the brake the least. So there we were flyin down that mountain like we owned the place. Pedal to the Medal! I am very proud of our squad for showing Slovenia how we Huskies take on any challenge full speed. Almost everyone in our group rode the chair lift back up and took the opportunity to ride down again because it was just that much fun. Slovenian Alpine Slide is definitely one to add to the bucket list.
I could have kept going all day but it was time to squeeze in a quick power nap before our match. I am usually not much of a napper but on this trip it become a necessity with all the incredible things we've been doing. After a much needed nap and a roll of energy chews, we were all ready to take on the Croatian National Team again. We dropped the first two sets but fought back to beat them in five! It was a fun match with some incredible serving by both teams.
Oh, I am still not done! Then we headed back to the hotel for another quick shower and were off again to head up the mountain. This time we rode in a gondola that took us even higher. We got to enjoy an AMAZING meal at a cute little restaurant that we had all to ourselves. The owner/chef whipped up a great array of meats along with rice, beans, soup, and salad. And of course some croissants and cake that we had to squeeze into our already stuffed tummys.
To top it off we all couldn't help but get up and start dancing when Bruno Mars's song "24K Magic" came on. The owner turned it up and we danced like no one was watching. We then tried to play a game of tag on the field but that did not last long. Volleyball is not really a sport that involves heavy cardio, as you could tell from our very short-lasting game. But it's okay we redeemed ourselves by returning to our killer dance moves and stationary games. Finally, we rode the gondola back down and called it a day! A day that we will always remember because of the fun we had together, both on and off the court!

Match 5 vs. Croatian Senior National Team
Following Saturday's 3-2 win over the Croatian National Team in Pazin, the Huskies got a rematch with the Croatian team in Maribor on a court within the Dras Hotel that hosts a number of traveling club and national teams during the summer. The match was another closely contested battle that went for five sets again, with Croatia winning the first two sets but the Dawgs then rallying back for the final three to win 21-25, 24-26, 25-13, 25-22, 15-10.
The Huskies were happy to welcome freshman Lauren Sanders back into the mix today, as she played for the first time since suffering a dislocated finger in UW's first match of the tour. Sanders was in the middle with Avie Niece, while Courtney Schwan, Kara Bajema, and Crissy Jones played outside, Jade Finau set, and Tia Scambray played libero, which she would continue to play for the full match.
Sanders had eight kills in her return, while Bajema led all Huskies with 16 kills followed by Jones with 13 and Carly DeHoog with 12 as she played a huge role in UW's last three set wins. The Dawgs continued to serve tough, with Scambray acing the Croatians six times without missing a serve, and Schwan adding three aces. Finau finished with 50 assists.
Down a couple points early, the Huskies tied the first set at 9-9 as Schwan had an out of system finish and then served an ace. Scambray teed up an ace and then Bajema ripped a kill up the line followed by a stuff from Jones for a 12-10 Husky lead. Croatia hit a pair of aces to pull ahead, but a tough float serve from Destiny Julye led to an error and a 16-16 tie. Croatia used another run to get to 20, with Sanders snapping that with a kill off the block for 17-20. Bajema connected for 19-23 and then Scambray hit an ace to pull closer, but the Croatian team closed out the first set, 25-21.
Maria Bogomolova was in to start the second set and had a kill up the left sideline to cut into what was an early lead for the Croatians. Sanders killed a Croatia overpass to close to 8-11, and then Bajema had another overpass kill off a Schwan serve for 11-12. Bogomolova gave the Dawgs the lead for the first time with consecutive kills for an 18-17 lead. A good serving run from Julye then extended that to 22-19, and Sanders had a huge rejection to make it 23-20. But Croatia grabbed the next three points to even it at 23. The Dawgs got to set point at 24-23, as Sanders had a clutch kill, but Croatia saved it and then grabbed the next two points as well to snatch away the set, 26-24.
Washington didn't let any disappointment linger for long in the third set, as the Huskies ran off the first nine points of the third set on a Schwan serving run. Schwan had two aces in the run with a couple Sanders kills plus finishes from Bajema and DeHoog. Scambray dug a rocket and DeHoog spiked it on the second contact for a kill for 10-1, and another ace from Scambray made it 12-1 Dawgs. Niece tipped over the block for a kill and Julye finished one in transition to keep the 10-point cushion at 16-6. The Croatians picked it up and cut the lead in half down to 17-12, but the Huskies swung right back with a 7-0 run of their own to put it away, as three more aces from Scambray helped finish the set at 25-13.
In the fourth set, Sanders put away a slide and then followed that with a roof as the Huskies were down 5-7. Croatia opened up a 6-12 lead but the Huskies clawed back into it with another big run, seven straight points on Shayne McPherson's serve, with Niece and DeHoog adding to their kill totals and Niece also stonewalling a Croatia swing. An ace from McPherson put the Dawgs up on, 13-12. DeHoog hammered two more down for a 16-13 lead. At 19-17, Bajema went up high to bring down a Finau set for a kill, and then DeHoog smartly wiped a tight set off the blockers for a kill to make it 23-21 Dawgs and the Huskies would finish it off, 25-22.
A standard fifth set to 15 points would wrap things up. Niece got the first point but Croatia scored the next three. DeHoog put away two more from the right pin to keep the Huskies on track, and two straight finishes from Jones on the left side made it 5-4 Dawgs. DeHoog then hit her first two aces of the match to make it 7-4. Bajema hit down a Croatia overpass for 11-6 and she had another big kill through the block for the point at 13-9 Dawgs. UW reached match point on a block assist from Niece and Jones, and the Huskies finished it off 15-10 when DeHoog hammered off the block and down on the right pin.
