Dawgs Abroad Day 7: Four Cities, One Day
June 19, 2017 | Volleyball
From June 11 until June 24, Washington Volleyball is in search of competition and culture in four different countries in Europe. The Huskies are on their first foreign adventure since 2013, joined by many family members and donors, to share in a once in a lifetime experience outside of their comfort zones. Arriving in Milan, Italy on June 12, the Dawgs have visited Lake Como and Venice before leaving Italy for Croatia (Umag and Rovinj) and then on to Slovenia (Ljubljana, Maribor and Bled) with an additional side trip to Graz, Austria, returning to Seattle on June 24. During the trip, the Huskies are scheduled to play seven matches against a mixture of senior national teams, junior national teams, and professional club teams.
While abroad, Husky players will be blogging about their experiences each day here on GoHuskies.com.
Day 1: Travel & Milan | Day 2: More Milan And A Match | Day 3: Lake Como And Match 2 | Day 4: Milan Farewell
Day 5: Venice | Day 6: On To Croatia
Sophomore outside hitter/middle blocker Kara Bajema recaps Washington's journey from Umag to Roving to Lubljana to Maribor.
Today in Europe we were in a total of four different cities and two countries. We woke up and originally planned on leaving Croatia around 9:00, but we had a little bit of a setback when our bus got a flat tire. Although we didn't end up leaving for another two hours, that didn't stop us from making the most of our time. Some played with the little kiddos, others read and some went down to the ocean to get smoothies. And before you know it we are back on the road to a small town called Rovinj.
Rovinj was on the water with lots of little shops to find souvenirs for you and your family or yummy fresh produce. A popular item that a lot of us girls bought was jewelry, especially anklets and bracelets. It was also Father's Day so I know a couple of us found little gifts to bring back to our dads. For food in Rovinj people either went and got some pizza and gelato or went to the market and got snacks for the long bus ride. I decided to go to the market and got a big thing of Pringles. The drive to our next stop Ljubljana required us to cross the Croatian/Slovenian border and due to immigration and it being a Sunday took quite a bit of time.
Ljubljana is a beautiful town in Slovenia with many different things to do and explore. We were all pretty hungry when we got there so right away we went to go find some food. There were a bunch of burger stands set up so we all split up and tried different ones. Other groups decided to go right up to the castle and some went to find one of the world's best cake shops. After dinner we walked around and explored the different streets and admired all the colorful and unique buildings.
While we were walking around we noticed the bridge that people would put locks on. A couple of us bought our locks and made our wishes as we tossed the key in the water. To end our day in Ljubljana we got some dessert and headed back to the bus. Overall this day consisted of a lot of travel. But with bus ride games and two beautiful cities on the way it was another great day in Europe.
