Dawgs Abroad Day 4: Milan Farewell
June 16, 2017 | Volleyball
From June 11 until June 24, Washington Volleyball is in search of competition and culture in four different countries in Europe. The Huskies are on their first foreign adventure since 2013, joined by many family members and donors, to share in a once in a lifetime experience outside of their comfort zones. Arriving in Milan, Italy on June 12, the Dawgs have plans to visit Lake Como and Venice before leaving Italy for Croatia (Umag and Pula) and then on to Slovenia (Maribor, Ljubljana, and Bled) with an additional side trip to Graz, Austria, returning to Seattle on June 24. During the trip, the Huskies are scheduled to play seven matches against a mixture of senior national teams, junior national teams, and professional club teams.
While abroad, Husky players will be blogging about their experiences each day here on GoHuskies.com.
Day 1: Travel & Milan | Day 2: More Milan And A Match | Day 3: Lake Como And Match 2
Junior outside hitter Destiny Julye recaps the final Milan match and some pool time at the hotel outside of Venice
Today was the fifth day of our foreign tour as well as our last day in Milan. This morning the team was pretty tired from the 8 pm match last night, late dinner, and the late arrival to the hotel at 1 am. There was a quick turnaround with another match this morning against the U20 Italian National Team, but it was exciting because it was the best competition we've had on the trip so far. The match ended up going 2-2, but it was a great challenge for each of us both physically and mentally.
After the match this morning, we had lunch at a nearby restaurant and then loaded the bus with all of suitcases and headed to Venice. The trip to Venice took approximately 4.5 hours and we stopped half way to hydrate and try out the some of the Italian sweets that everyone raves about! For half of the bus ride the whole team was stretched out on their seats and slept, while the other half was spent playing trivia. The trivia on the bus was hilarious because everyone on the team is so competitive and it was also cool to see what random facts everyone knew. After the long bus ride, we were finally in the outskirts of Venice and the team quickly changed into swimsuits and headed to the hotel's outdoor pool. Not only were the pools very refreshing after the long bus ride, but it was also a great way to spend some time playing with the Gabriel kids and to rest.
After a few hours in the pool, everyone made their way back to the rooms to get ready for dinner. Dinner was buffet-style tonight with a salad bar, dessert, and a few dishes that I was nervous to try. For the rest of tonight, my goal is to finish packing and catch up on my summer reading list. I'm looking forward to seeing Venice tomorrow and as well as taking a gondola for the first time!!

Match 3 vs. Italian U20 National Team
On their final morning in Milan, the Huskies faced some tough competition in the Italian U20 National Team, and despite having played late the previous night, the Dawgs responded with their best volleyball of the trip thus far. Played at the National Team Training Center just a five minute walk from Washington's hotel, the Dawgs split four sets with the Italians, who are heading to the FIVB World U20 Championships in Mexico fro mJuly 14-23.
Crissy Jones led the Dawgs with 10 kills while Kara Bajema added seven, while Tia Scambray had five, and Courtney Schwan, Avie Niece, and Carly DeHoog all added four apiece, with Jade Finau dishing out 33 assists. The Dawgs had a strong serving match as well, dealing 12 aces and making only five service errors. Finau and Jones had three aces each while Shayne McPherson and Scambray both had two aces.
Washington's starting lineup was Finau, Schwan, Jones, Scambray, Niece, Bajema, and McPherson. Three of UW's dozen aces came early in set one, one each from Finau, Schwan, and McPherson, as the Huskies took a 6-2 lead. The Italians caught up at 7-7, but Scambray kept the lead with a kill and then Bajema killed an overpass resulting from a Scambray serve. Bajema and Finau then stuffed a swing for 10-7. Niece had a big stuff block and then Jones laid out to dig up a tip attempt and Schwan converted to make it 14-11. The Huskies had a 3-0 run on McPherson's serve with transition kills from Scambray to keep UW ahead, 18-14. Another ace from Jones had it at 20-16, then Niece had a tip kill and a block assist with Schwan to get to set point at 24-21. Italy saved the first two and the Huskies called time, then out of the break, McPherson had a perfect pass and Finau set Jones on the left pin for a kill to end it, 25-23.
DeHoog checked in to start the second set, with Bajema shifting from middle blocker to the outside, and Jones vice versa. They grabbed the first three points with a DeHoog kill and a Niece stuff, and another block from Jones made it a 6-3 lead. Bajema killed one off the block for 7-5. A sideout from Jones on the right pin sparked a 4-0 run, as she rotated back to serve and tossed in an ace, followed by Scambray getting a kill from the back row, and a second Jones ace for 13-9. DeHoog had two straight kills to make it 16-10 and force an Italy timeout, but the Italians rallied to get within two points before DeHoog had a big block for 18-15. Scambray served an ace for 21-17, but Italy made another run to tie it at 21 and UW called time. The Italians hit long out of the break, and a Jones float serve earned UW a free ball that Niece killed for 23-21, prompting an Italian timeout. The words worked this time, as Italy stole the set from the Dawgs with four in a row out of the break, evening the match at 1-1.
Set three saw Bajema and Jones swap spots again, and Bajema chalked up her first ace of the day for a 3-1 lead. The Husky block turned back three consecutive points to build a big lead at 8-2, with Niece or Jones in on all three. An Italy error and a Finau ace kept the Husky run going to 10-2. The Italians fought back within five points, but Destiny Julye had a big kill to stop that run and make it 14-8. Schwan had a booming rejection for 16-9. Another crucial block came from Jones to make it 19-15 and McPherson followed with an ace to get some breathing room again at 20-15. Bajema finished a slide off the blockf for 22-17. Schwan got the Dawgs to set point at 24-20, and Italy served into the net to end the set, 25-21, for the Dawgs.
The Italians got an early lead for the first time in the fourth set. Niece slammed a quick set in transition to make it 8-11 in Italy's favor. The Dawgs got within 10-12, but Italy responded with a pair of blocks and a kill in transition to make it 10-16 and force the Huskies into a timeout. Italy continued to pull away as the 13 sets over two and a half days looked to finally catch up to the Dawgs a bit, with Italy winning the fourth and final set, 25-13, with the teams agreeing not to play a fifth.
