Dawgs Abroad Day 3: Lake Como And Match 2
June 15, 2017 | Volleyball
From June 11 until June 24, Washington Volleyball is in search of competition and culture in four different countries in Europe. The Huskies are on their first foreign adventure since 2013, joined by many family members and donors, to share in a once in a lifetime experience outside of their comfort zones. Arriving in Milan, Italy on June 12, the Dawgs have plans to visit Lake Como and Venice before leaving Italy for Croatia (Umag and Pula) and then on to Slovenia (Maribor, Ljubljana, and Bled) with an additional side trip to Graz, Austria, returning to Seattle on June 24. During the trip, the Huskies are scheduled to play seven matches against a mixture of senior national teams, junior national teams, and professional club teams.
While abroad, Husky players will be blogging about their experiences each day here on GoHuskies.com.
Day 1: Travel & Milan | Day 2: More Milan And A Match
Sophomore libero Shayne McPherson recaps a trip to Lake Como and sings some opera.
Ciao, Husky Fans!
Today was our third day in Milan, Italy. We ventured out to Lake Como in the morning which was about an hour drive. On the way there the team and I played games which helped the time go by fast. When we arrived at the lake we first had to walk through gorgeous buildings in the town where there was different shops and restaurants to get to the lake. The weather forecast told us it was supposed to rain but luckily we got really nice weather today. The whole group and I went up on the funicular that took us up to the top of the mountain where we could see all of Lake Como. The view was stunning and we all took a bunch of pictures.
When we came back down we all split up into groups and did different things. Crissy, Kara, Courtney and I decided to eat at a restaurant right on the water which was peaceful and so delicious. I love seafood, so I got the grilled salmon they had which was amazing. And of course Kara got a hamburger with just cheese and ketchup (stupid American). After our delicious lunch on the water we walked to the best gelato in town. After eating our gelato, us and another group hung out and sat by the water. We took some artsy pictures and someone decided to play me in odds... I lost and had to sing opera in front of people at a cafe for 30 seconds (opera is my hidden talent). I'm pretty sure everyone enjoying their coffee and croissants wanted to throw me into the water but it's chill.
After a great time at Lake Como we got back on the bus to head back to our hotel to get ready for our match that night. We got back to the hotel to nap and regroup then left for our match which was an hour drive. I have a tiny bladder and had to pee most of that ride. Of course when we got to the facility they didn't have any toilets, they had lovely squat areas with a small hole to pee in. That experience was pretty interesting and difficult to say the least.
Our second match of the trip went to four, we tied 2-2. The gym was very hot with tons of mosquitoes, but we survived and grew as a team that match. During our game there was a huge thunder storm and we could see the lighting through all the windows surrounding the gym. I guess we brought the rain with us!
After this day I realized that my goal is to have gelato everyday I'm here, that I'm starting to like the fizzy water they serve everywhere, that I should buy bug spray and that I should never use a squat toilet again. As the team would say we're surviving and thriving!
Buongiorno!
Match 2 vs. Garlasco
An hour's drive outside of Milan, the Huskies played their second match against the Garlasco club team, another B-level Italian squad. Another late start time after a long day with a hot gym gave the Huskies some built-in adversity, but the Dawgs came out strong, taking the first two sets before the home squad rallied and took sets three and four to finish the match in a draw.
Washington enjoyed some additional fan support, as native Italians and fellow Husky student-athletes from the men's and women's crew teams and the track team came out to shout a few "Point Huskies!" and then join the Dawgs for dinner afterwards.
In the first set, the Huskies started a lineup of Jade Finau at setter, Maria Bogomolova, Tia Scambray, and Carly DeHoog outside, Avie Niece and Kara Bajema in the middle, and Shayne McPherson at libero.
Scambray hit down a Garlasco overpass for a kill and DeHoog put away a couple early swings in the first set. Scambray served an ace and Niece checked in with a kill as the Huskies quickly raced out to a 9-1 lead. Bajema connected with Finau on a slide attack to push the lead to 16-5, and then Bajema and Finau teamed up on a block. Garlasco had a late run to make the score more even, but the Huskies closed it out, 25-21.
Destiny Julye entered the lineup in set two and she had two straight blocks to make it a 5-3 Husky lead. Washington trailed, 12-15, but a pair of kills from Scambray helped the Dawgs tie it back up. Bajema had a roof, and followed that up with a kill off the blocker's hands to push the Dawgs in front, 21-18. On their second set point, Bajema attacked from the right pin and powered one up the line and in to end the set, 25-23.
Finau opened the third set with an ace, and Julye posted two more blocks to make it 4-3 Dawgs. A lengthy rally was finished by a Niece swing out of the middle to give the Huskies a 12-9 edge, but Garlasco battled back to grab the lead at 15-16. Niece spiked down an overpass to keep the Dawgs close, down 18-19, but Garlasco turned away the comeback, getting the 25-21 set win.
In the fourth set, DeHoog checked back in and had a couple of early kills, and then Bajema hammered another slide for a 6-5 lead. Scambray dropped a short serve in for an ace for 9-9. Julye had a perfect bump set to Bogomolova who put it away, but Garlasco opened up a lead at 10-13. Down six points, the Huskies got back into it, helped by an ace from Cailin Onosko to make it 16-19. Finau dumped one for a kill at 17-20 but the Huskies would not get closer, as the hosts closed out the set, 25-20, to conclude the match at two sets apiece.
