Dawgs Abroad Day 2: More Milan And A Match
June 14, 2017 | Volleyball
From June 11 until June 24, Washington Volleyball is in search of competition and culture in four different countries in Europe. The Huskies are on their first foreign adventure since 2013, joined by many family members and donors, to share in a once in a lifetime experience outside of their comfort zones. Arriving in Milan, Italy on June 12, the Dawgs have plans to visit Lake Como and Venice before leaving Italy for Croatia (Umag and Pula) and then on to Slovenia (Maribor, Ljubljana, and Bled) with an additional side trip to Graz, Austria, returning to Seattle on June 24. During the trip, the Huskies are scheduled to play seven matches against a mixture of senior national teams, junior national teams, and professional club teams.
While abroad, Husky players will be blogging about their experiences each day here on GoHuskies.com.
Day 1: Travel & Milan
Senior outside hitter Tia Scambray recaps the some sightseeing in Milan and a long elevator ride.
The day started out amazing because for one, sleeping with my feet up on the wall had gotten rid of my swollen ankles from the long flight and secondly, the breakfast buffet was delicious. Shayne and I are roommates and we had quite a few helpings of the chocolate croissants. After breakfast our group of people who had slept in ventured into the city. We started out our site seeing with a motorized bike tour through a nearby castle and park. We rode all the way to a famous arch called The Arch of Peace, where we took pictures and stopped for water at a cute little café. After our bike tour, we came back to the city center and began to stroll down a street full of cute stores. We shopped until we dropped and bought very trendy outfits from Italy's fashion capitol. Lunch was also quite delicious although I love pizza more than my right arm so I am a little biased. Once we were done with lunched we headed to our train to take us back to our hotel.
The lowest point of the day occurred once we returned to the hotel, where an unfortunate event occurred on the very small elevator. The elevator said that it could fit five people, but that's probably normal sized people not 6-foot-tall volleyball players. Us being overly optimistic on the strength of the elevator attempted to pile in six of us without looking at the limit first. The group consisted of Crissy, Jade, Destiny, Courtney, Shayne, and myself. On our way up to the third floor the elevator stopped, and of course we all started to panic. Crissy yanks open the interior elevator door to find that we were only about a foot off from making it to the third floor. Jade begins to yell for help through the small crack of air that we have in the door, and lucky for us our teammates and my father were passing by the third floor elevator. First they laughed and then a few of the girls went to get an attendant. My father says, "How many of you are in there?!" We reply tentatively, "Six of us…" and we get a "Well that was probably stupid," back as he leaves us to figure our way out. We finally got out with help from an attendant about 20 minutes later.
After that traumatizing event we got ready for our match and headed out on the bus. Before our match we visited the main part of the town we were playing in and got a tour of a castle there. After our tour, we got an amazing pizza from a nearby family owned pizza shop where we made friends with the owners. Then we took our pizzas to go and headed out to our match. We played a five-set match and came up a little short but we got better with each game and we hope to continue to improve as we move forward in our endeavors. During the middle of the second set Lauren's hand was hit awkwardly with a ball off the block and she dislocated her finger. It was very gross, but she took it like a champ as they rushed her to the hospital to get it put back in. She met back up with us at dinner with a huge cast on her hand and a big smile on her face. We stuffed our faces with pizza and then took our bus home with happy full bellies. We got back to the hotel and took the STAIRS up to our rooms for a good nights rest.

Match 1 vs. Lurano
At the end of a long day of sightseeing and travel, the Huskies finally took to the court at 9 p.m. local time for a match against Lurano, an Italian B-level club team located near Bergamo. Washington looked at a lot of different lineup combinations during the match, and the teams went back and forth, alternating set wins and going to extra points in a fifth set. The Dawgs had a match point but Lurano saved it and pulled it out, 17-15, in the fifth.
Crissy Jones led the Dawgs with 12 kills on 18 attacks without an error, while Tia Scambray had 11 kills, Avie Niece and Kara Bajema both had eight, and Courtney Schwan had seven.
Starters for the first set were Jade Finau at setter, Destiny Julye, Courtney Schwan, and Crissy Jones at outside hitter, Avie Niece and Lauren Sanders in the middle, and Tia Scambray at libero.
The Huskies were down a couple points early in the first set. Jones got the Dawgs some momentum with a couple right side kills, and Julye tied it at 12-12 with a kill on the left. A tough Jones serve resulted in a free ball and Julye finished for a 14-12 lead. Sanders had a stuff block and Julye served up an ace for a 17-14 lead. Lurano took timeout after a Sanders ace made it 19-16 Dawgs, but out of the break, Lurano went on a late run and came back to grab the set, 26-24.
Among the changes in set two were Shayne McPherson donning the libero jersey, Scambray starting at outside hitter along with Carly DeHoog and Kara Bajema. Cailin Onosko subbed in to serve early and played consistently in the back row.
A couple Bajema kills and an ace got UW up 7-4 early in the set. Lurano went back up one, but Scambray tied it with a kill off the block. A big Husky run included a pair of aces from DeHoog for a 16-12 lead. Scambray put away a tough swing out of system and Jones floated an ace to the back line for 22-18, and the Dawgs closed out the set, 25-20.
Maria Bogomolova started in the third set along with Schwan and Bajema at the pins. Niece and Jones played middle with FInau and McPherson continuing on at setter and libero. The Huskies started slow, falling behind 1-6, and were unable to come all the way back, remaining 3-6 points down for the rest of the set, as Lurano took the 2-1 lead with a 25-19 win.
Washington got off to a quicker start in the fourth set, and forced a Lurano timeout at 10-6. Washington extended it to a 15-10 lead and a stuff block from Schwan made it 18-14 Dawgs. Niece slammed the door with a kill as the Huskies secured the fourth set, 25-17.
In the fifth set, the Dawgs had a couple of their best plays of the night. Finau showed some December NCAA tourney intensity with a big rejection at net to put the Dawgs up 8-6. Bajema then absolutely hammered a Finau set to the floor up the left sideline for 12-12. Jones hit from the middle for a 13-12 lead. The Huskies had a match point at 14-13, but Lurano saved it. Bajema got blocked to go down 14-15 but adjusted on her next attempt for a kill for 15-all. But Lurano was able to grab the next two points to finish off the hard-fought match, 17-15.
The Huskies were then presented with a bouquet of flowers from their hosts, and UW gave out some Husky volleyball gear as the teams posed for photos at the net before the Dawgs left for some late night pizza.
