PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 21 Washington earned a second consecutive ranked win on Friday night by taking down No. 13 Rutgers 2-0 on the road.
With the win, the Huskies retake first place in the Big Ten standings with 15 points and a 5-1 record in conference play. Overall, the Huskies improve to 8-3-2 with their fourth straight win.
Early offense has been key during the recent win streak, and Friday's victory was no different. Joe Dale kicked off the scoring in the 10th minute, bagging his first goal of the season off the feed from Richie Aman.
With the win over Rutgers, Washington is now 7-0 on the year when scoring first and 6-0 when scoring in the first 45 minutes.
The insurance goal didn't come until after some drama in the second half.
Rutgers was given a chance to equalize with a penalty kick in the 63rd minute.
With his team clinging to a one-goal advantage, Jadon Bowton made a clutch diving save to keep the clean sheet and maintain the lead for the Huskies.
Washington kept the pressure on and found the second breakthrough with a counter attack 10 minutes after the penalty save.
Richie Aman began the move, finding Cameron Cruz on the left side of the pitch. Cruz delivered a ball into the box and Nick O'Brien slotted it home to double the lead.
It was the first point of the season for Cruz and O'Brien's first goal of the season. Aman, meanwhile, recorded his 10th and 11th assists of the season against Rutgers.
The senior midfielder has had multi-assists games on five occasions this season and moves into a tie for fourth in the Husky record book for assists in a single campaign.
While the Huskies offense has been hot lately, the defense has been just as impressive. Washington has shutout their opponents in the last four games, including two top-15 opponents in then-No. 12 Indiana and No. 13 Rutgers.
In addition to the crucial penalty kick save, Jadon Bowton made four other stops for a season-high five saves against Rutgers. It's Bowton's fifth win of the season and his third shutout.
The Huskies will look to continue the win streak on Monday at Penn State. Following the match in Pennsylvania, Washington returns home to face Ohio State on October 24.
