BERKELEY, Calif. – Washington earned a split in the Bay Area, bouncing back from Friday's loss to defeat California, 75-65. Kelsey Plum led the way with 28 points, surpassing 2,000 for her career in the process.
Plum became the fastest player in Pac-12 history to score 2,000 points, doing it in just 88 games. She joins Jazmine Davis and Jamie Redd in the Husky 2,000 point club, but as a junior has plenty of time to add to her total that now sits at 2,025.
Plum got the milestone out of the way early on, knocking down a 3-pointer at the 3:15 mark of the first quarter to go over 2,000 points. She had the hot hand in the half, making 5-8, including 2-3 from 3-point range to total 15 points in the opening 20 minutes. Overall, the Huskies shot it well, converting on 14-31 (45.2 percent) and knocking down six 3-pointers.
In addition to Plum's 15, Chantel Osahor had nine, while Talia Walton and Alexus Atchley had five each. Atchley scored the first five points of the game as the Dawgs never trailed in the opening half. Washington took a 38-34 lead to the break.
The Dawgs extended the lead in the third quarter as Walton found the shooting touch, making a pair of 3-pointers. Washington led by as many as 13 and took a 58-47 lead to the fourth.
Cal made its run early in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to five, but the Huskies responded extending the lead back to double digits. Atchley punctuated a 6-0 run to get the Dawgs back in control with a driving layup. The senior finished with 11 points for her second game in double digits since becoming a starter.
Washington hung on from there, taking care of the basketball and getting enough stops to finish off the victory. Plum came through with six free throws in the final minutes as she scored 11 in the fourth.
The Huskies had four players in double figures as Osahor finished with 16, Walton 12 and Atchley's 11 in addition to 28 from Plum. Osahor also had her seventh double-double adding 10 rebounds. The Dawgs finished even on the glass as both teams had 38 rebounds as Walton added nine boards and Collier, eight.
For the game, the Dawgs shot 43.5 percent (27-62) and 40 percent (10-25) from 3-point range. Washington also won the turnover battle 16-10 and scored 19 points off turnovers to just two for the Bears.
The Huskies will now return home to host No. 9 Oregon State and Oregon next weekend. The Beavers come to Alaska Airlines Arena on Friday night for a 6 p.m. tip that will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks. That game will also be a whiteout at Hec Ed. The Ducks and Huskies will square off at noon on Sunday for a game that will be webcast only.
