BERKELEY, Calif. - Saturday's rainout at Cal forced a doubleheader on Sunday in which the No. 3/3 Huskies dropped both games to No. 1/1 Cal, 5-3 and 6-4. UW is now 32-4 overall and 3-3 in Pac-12 play while the Golden Bears improve to 33-1, 6-0.
"Overall this was a good weekend for us," said head coach Heather Tarr. "Cal has great pitching and I thought we competed well at the plate. We take a lot of good learning opportunities with us as we continue on in Pac-12 play."
Game One - No. 1/1 Cal 5, No. 3/3 UW 3
Two new pitchers started for each team in game two compared to game one, as freshman Kasey Stanchek (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) and Valerie Arioto from Cal took to the circle.
Stanchek pitched the first 4.0 innings, allowing five runs on four hits with four strikeouts. Sophomore Bryana Walker (La Quinta, Calif.) pitched the final 2.0 innings, allowing just one hit and giving the Huskies a chance to rally back, but UW fell just short in the seventh inning.
Arioto allowed three runs on four hits in 7.0 innings and had nine strikeouts.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third in which Cal got its first two runs.
Frani Echavarria hit a solo homer to deep center to lead off the third. With the bases loaded for Cheyenne Cordes, she walked for the RBI.
Cal got one more in the fourth and two in the fifth. In the fourth, Echavarria singled and scored on a double by Britt Vonk. Three walks in the fifth inning loaded the bases again for Cal, as Danielle Henderson hit a single to left driving in two.
The last two innings is where UW did its damage. After walks in the sixth with one out to senior Nikia Williams (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and sophomore Kaitlin Inglesby (Portlanad, Ore.), sophomore Hooch Fagaly (Chino, Calif.) hit a double to center for the first UW run of the game.
Freshman Courtney Gano (West Covina, Calif.) led off the seventh with a double down the left field line and scored on a double to center by sophomore Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.). Williams walked and runners were on the corners with two outs for Inglesby, the tying run. Inglesby singled to left to cut the lead to 5-3 with two outs and Fagaly up. But, a ground out to ended the game.
Game Two - No. 1/1 Cal 6, No. 3/3 UW 4
Inglesby got her second shot of the weekend in the circle against Cal, allowing four earned runs in the 6-4 loss. She allowed six total runs in 5.0 innings on 12 hits. Walker pitched the sixth inning and had one strikeout.
Jolene Henderson pitched the complete game for Cal, allowing four runs on eight hits with 10 strikeouts.
Inglesby led the Huskies at the plate with three hits in the game as UW had eight total.
A two-run home run by Arioto in the first gave Cal the early lead. In the second for the Golden Bears, Elia Reid and Victoria Jones scored, unearned.
UW cut the lead to two, 4-2 with two runs of its own in the third on a two-run home run by Williams after a single by senior Kimi Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.).
Cal got those two runs back in the fifth, after doubles by Jones and Reid.
The Huskies rallied late again, scoring twice more in the seventh as Williams singled for an RBI and Inglesby doubled with two outs, but a strikeout would end the game.
UW hosts Arizona Thursday-Saturday next week in a Pac-12 series. Game times are 6 p.m. the first two days and noon for the third game.
