March 26, 2023 | Softball
SEATTLE – No. 9 Washington secured its first conference series sweep of the season in a 6-4 extra innings win over No. 19 Arizona on Sunday afternoon at Husky Softball Stadium. Baylee Klingler hit the walk-off three-run home run in extra innings to power the Huskies to victory.
Washington improves to 25-6 overall and 6-3 in Pac-12 play.
Arizona got the scoring started in the first with a run off a pair of hits to take a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, Madison Huskey hit her team-leading 10th home run of the season to tied the game at one a piece.
The Wildcats took their second lead of the contest after scoring a pair of runs in the fifth. Washington responded once again to tie the game on Alana Johnson's two-run homer. It was Johnson's second two-run home run in as many days.
The game was sent to extra innings tied at three runs, where Arizona scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth on a two-out RBI single by Tayler Biehl. Ruby Meylan was able to limit the damage to just a run by ending the half inning on a groundout to leave a runner on base.
Back-to-back singles by Johnson and Brooklyn Carter put runners on first and second and no outs for Klingler. Klingler smashed her eighth home run of the season over the center field wall for the second walk-off of the series for the Huskies.
Brooke Nelson got the start for the Huskies, tossing four innings with one run allowed on three hits and a strikeout. Meylan picked up her 12th win of the season after coming in relief and tossing the final four frames.
Up next, the Huskies head back down to Arizona for a matchup with Arizona State March 31-April 2. All three games will stream on the ASU Live Stream.
