May 15, 2022 | Baseball
SEATTLE - Having won the first two games of the series, the Huskies faced the USC Trojans today hopeful for both a sweep and a definitive answer to their eligibility for the post-season Pac-12 Tournament. A back and forth game kept things interesting, with the Huskies ultimately looking for some magic in the bottom of the ninth down two runs. That comeback magic was delivered, highlighted by a McKay Barney double and an AJ Guerrero two-run home run, as the Huskies completed the sweep with an 8-6 win.

After holding the runner on, a ground ball just past a diving Simpson at first put two on. A line drive to right followed, but Morales was able to make the easy catch and almost doubled up the runner at first as well. Β With two down, a double steal moved both baserunners into scoring position. The batter swung over the top of the next pitch though, for out number three.

Β The second batter drove a single up the middle to put a runner on. A full count to the next batter was cleaned up with a fly ball to Morales in right. A walk followed to put runners on first and second with two outs. The bases would be cleared however, with a USC home run to put the Trojans on top 4-3. Β
- Starter Adam Bloebaum pitched 4 solid innings giving up just 1 unearned run on 3 hits with no walks and 4 strikeouts. Case Matter took the win moving to 2-2 on the season. He went 4 and a third giving up 2 runs on 1 hit with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts.
- The Huskies began the series in a messy mix of teams for the eighth and final spot in the Pac-12 Tournament May 25-29th. The Huskies controlled their own destiny and a sweep of USC put an end to those concerns. Currently in seventh place, the 14-16 HuskiesΒ sit three games up on the 11-16 California Golden Bears. A sweep of Utah next weekend in Berkeley would give Cal the tie-breaker however, as they took the series over the Huskies back in April, two games to one. It's also worth noting that the Huskies could move up to sixth as well should 13-14 Arizona State get swept in Pullman next weekend. Two losses wouldn't cut it though as ASU holds that tie-breaker as well after taking two againstΒ WashingtonΒ back in March.
- A 30-win season is still in play for the HuskiesΒ who have five non-conference games left, all at home. Next up is California Baptist Tuesday at 6:05 PM, followed by four against Northern Colorado. That series features a rare Thursday night 6:05 PM start to the series, a Friday double-header starting at 12:05 PM, then the Dawgs wrap up the regular season on Saturday at 1:05 PM.
