April 28, 2017 | Softball
BERKELEY, Calif. – No. 8 Washington captured a 4-0 win at California in the series opener at Levine-Fricke Stadium Friday evening.
Taylor Van Zee went 2-for-4 on the day and collected three RBIs. Morganne Flores was 3-for-4 and drove in the other UW run.
Taran Alvelo (22-6) pitched a complete game for Washington. She gave up only four hits and issued zero walks.
For the fourth game in a row, Washington got on the board in the first inning. Sis Bates singled, followed by a walk to Casey Stangel. Flores singled to load the bases and Van Zee brought in the first run on a RBI single.
An explosive Husky offense in the fifth inning tacked on three more runs, beginning with a walk issued to Ali Aguilar. Stangel was issued a walk after Cal starter Zoe Conley called a timeout after an out, a rule that has been implemented this season by the Pac-12 Conference. Flores doubled to bring in Aguilar. Van Zee pounded her third hit of the day and brought home pinch runners Alyssa Simons and Kajia Gibson to extend Washington's lead to 4-0.
The teams will continue their three-game series tomorrow, April 29 at 12 p.m. PT at Levine-Fricke Stadium. The game will be covered by the Pac-12 Network with Krista Blunk and Barb Jordan on the air.
