SEATTLE -- Fresh off their first two conference wins, the Huskies have a long, tough road to travel this week, going to No. 1-ranked Nebraska on Friday then jetting back west to Oregon for a Sunday matinee. Both matches will be televised live on Big Ten Network, as UW enters a sold out Bob Devaney Center on Friday at 6 p.m. Pacific time, then less than 48 hours later takes the floor at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene at 1 p.m.
The Huskies got back to .500 overall and in conference last week (7-7 and 2-2) with two of their most complete performances of the season thus far. Washington hit .363 in a 3-1 win over Ohio State and then .372 in a sweep over Iowa. Defensively the Dawgs outblocked their opponents by a 23 to 8 margin, averaging 3.29 blocks per set. UW is now 6-1 this season when outblocking its opponent.
Katy Wessels has moved up to No. 5 in the Big Ten in blocking, with 1.30 per set. Kierstyn Barton ranks eighth with 3.90 kills per set and Alexa Markley is 18th with 3.35. Zoria Heard has climbed up to fourth in the Big Ten with 3.66 digs per set.
The Huskers have yet to lose, sitting at 14-0 and 4-0 in league play, having won several big matches during the nonconference, including wins over then No. 3 Pitt, then No. 6 Stanford, then-No. 7 Kentucky in five sets, and more top-25 wins over Utah and Creighton. Nebraska swept at Penn State and Rutgers last week. The Huskers are hitting .327 to rank second in the league, and holding opponents to just .102, which is the best by a good margin. Harper Murray leads the squad with 3.59 kills per set, hitting .285, and Rebekah Allick is hitting a red hot .475 for the year with 2.65 kills per set. MB Andi Jackson also provides 2.40 kills per set, hitting .379. Setter Bergen Reilly averages 9.43 assists per set and also leads the team with 2.88 digs per set. UW has not been to Lincoln since the NCAA Regional in 2016, when the Huskies beat Arizona in the round of 16 then fell to Nebraska in the Elite Eight.
The Ducks are also 2-2 in Big Ten play, having defeated Iowa (3-2) and Ohio State (3-0) last week in Eugene after falling to Illinois and Northwestern on the road in the opening week. Oregon is in its first season under Head Coach Trent Kersten. Oregon ranks seventh in the league with a .271 attack percentage and opponents are hitting .214 against. Valentina Vaulet has a team-high 3.39 kills per set, hitting .288, and she ranks fourth in the Big Ten with 0.46 aces per set. Iva Sucurovic is among the Big Ten leaders in blocks at 1.29 per set and attack percentage at .415. The Huskies and Ducks split two five setters last season, each winning on their home courts.
