SEATTLE -- A third consecutive Top-20 home match looms for the Husky volleyball team this Friday night, as 12th-ranked Wisconsin comes in for a 7 p.m. showdown at Alaska Airlines Arena. The Dawgs hit the halfway point of conference play this week as they try to continue to move up the Big Ten standings as they currently sit in a tie for 10th at 4-4. Following the UW-UW battle on Friday, the Huskies head to L.A. for a Sunday 12 noon meet-up with 22nd-ranked USC at the Galen Center.
Friday night is also the Huskies For A Cure match where UW will be wearing pink and encouraging all fans to do the same for cancer awareness. UW Athletics is collaborating with UW Medicine's Cancer Vaccine Institute to raise funds and raise awareness. Fans can fill out an "I wear pink for..." sign and grab a Huskies For A Cure wristband while supplies last.
The two matches this week are the third- and fourth-consecutive top-25 matches for the Dawgs. Washington picked up its first ranked win last Friday, upsetting then-No. 17 Penn State in five sets, but No. 18 Minnesota ended the Huskies' week on a frustrating note with a 3-1 win on Saturday. UW can respond quickly as the powerhouse Badgers visit with a 6-2 conference record and a 13-3 mark on the season.
Just in conference play, the Huskies are among the leaders with a .261 overall attack percentage, ranking fourth. They also have the fourth-best opposing attack percentage, holding teams to .202. Zoria Heard remains second in the Big Ten in both digs per set at 3.85 and total digs with 262. In conference play she's second as well with 4.14 digs per set. Kierstyn Barton is ninth in kills per set in the league with 3.77. Alexis Haury ranks ninth with 9.85 assists per set.
The Badgers make their first visit to Seattle since 2019 which was the second end of a home-and-home sweep for the Dawgs. But Wisconsin swept the Huskies in Madison a year ago to snap a five-match Husky win streak in the series. Wisconsin is coming off a split at home against the L.A. schools last week, sweeping UCLA but falling in four to USC. One Badger player familiar with Hec Ed is Mimi Colyer, a former Oregon outside hitter, who is second in the Big Ten and leads Wisconsin with 5.00 kills per set, hitting .288. Carter Booth is second in the B1G with a .416 attack percentage, and she leads the league with 1.43 blocks per set. Libero Kristen Simon is third in the league with 3.78 digs per set. Wisconsin's primary setter, Charlie Fuerbringer, has been out since Oct. 5, with Addy Horner stepping in to replace her. The Badgers remain second in the league with a .295 attack percentage in conference play.
The Trojans are even with the Huskies with a 4-4 conference record and will host Maryland on Thursday before UW visits. USC is 13-5 overall and is coming off a big win at Wisconsin. The Trojans have suffered conference losses at Penn State, home to Purdue and Indiana, and at UCLA. The Huskies are looking to snap a four-match skid against USC, which was preceded by a five-match win streak. London Wijay's 3.14 kills per set lead USC, followed closely by Abigail Mullen at 2.94 per set. Mullen has the second-most aces in the B1G with 32. Leah Ford and Mia Tvrdy are one of the top Big Ten blocking combos, averaging 1.28 and 1.26 blocks per set, respectively. Reese Messer ranks fourth in the Big Ten in assists per set with 10.41.
