Joe DeMers Returning To Montlake As Undergraduate Assistant
August 23, 2023 | Baseball, Washington Athletics Staff Central
SEATTLE β Washington head baseball coach Jason Kelly has announced the return of one of the all-time great Huskies to Montlake as former All-Pac-12 standout pitcher Joe DeMers will serve as an undergraduate assistant at UW.
Β
"We couldn't be more excited to welcome Joe back to Montlake," Kelly said. "Joe's experience in college and professional baseball will be an invaluable resource for our players, not to mention the benefit of getting one of the all-time great Huskies back in our dugout!"
Β
Following a pair of solid seasons, DeMers firmly secured his status as the UW ace in 2018, leading the Dawgs to their first ever College World Series berth. Posting a 7-3 record with a 2.42 ERA, the Martinez, California, native earned ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove honors and All-Pac-12 status.
Β
When it mattered most in the postseason, DeMers stepped his game to another level. In four postseason starts in 2018, the righty delivered a 1.80 ERA over 25.0 IP. In his NCAA Tournament debut against UConn, DeMers tossed eight innings of one-run ball, striking out six along the way. Despite the Huskies ultimately falling to Mississippi State in Omaha, DeMers gave the Dawgs a chance, delivering 7.1 shutout innings.
Β
In possibly the most iconic moment in program-history, DeMers threw the 27th perfect game in NCAA history, the first by a Husky, in 2018 against UC Riverside. The California hurler needed just 84 pitches to complete nine innings, striking out nine batters.
Β
DeMers earned All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention plaudits as a sophomore in 2017, registering a 6-3 record with a 3.35 ERA over 15 appearances. As a rookie, DeMers made 16 starts on the bump, tied for second most in the conference.
