Fourth Quarter Dooms Huskies in 66-59 Loss to WSU
January 11, 2020 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE --- Amber Melgoza poured in 14 points with Missy Peterson contributing 13, but a rough fourth quarter was Washington's downfall in a 66-59 loss to Washington State in the second game of the Boeing Apple Cup Series on Saturday afternoon at Alaska Airlines Arena.
The loss drops the Huskies to 10-5 on the season and back to 2-2 in Pac-12 play. The Cougars improve to 9-7 and to 2-2 in the conference as the teams split the Apple Cup Series with each winning on the other's home court. The loss marked the first time Washington had lost back-to-back games all year.
Melgoza had another economical night from the field, hitting 6-of-13 from the field to finish with 14 points while adding five rebounds, two assists and a block. Meanwhile, Peterson scored 13 points thanks to hitting 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, while Darcy Rees had eight points and eight rebounds—including four on the offensive glass.
The Huskies looked strong, leading through much of the game and holding the Cougars to just 21 points through the first half. But Washington State found its shot late, especially in the fourth quarter, outscoring Washington 29-17 in the fourth to pull away for the win.
The game got off to a slow start as the teams combined to shoot 1-of-16 from the field through the first six minutes with UW leading 3-0 after the media timeout. But coming out of the break, Ali Bamberger keyed a 7-2 run over the next two minutes with a corner three to stretch the UW lead to 10-2 at the 3:17 mark. But WSU would score the final four points of the quarter and the Huskies had to settle for a 10-6 lead through the first 10 minutes.
The Cougars kept the run going with a three to open the second quarter before Darcy Rees ended it with a great bucket after getting two offensive possessions. The teams went back and forth over the next three minutes until a quick five-point run by WSU gave the visitors their first lead of the game at 17-16 at the 5:34 mark. Missy Peterson put the Huskies back in front a minute later followed by a bucket from Mai-Loni Henson to push the lead back three with 3:45 left before the half.
After the late media timeout, Bamberger hit one of two free throws with Alexis Griggsby securing the offensive board. Rita Pleskevich would then hit a fadeaway jumper at the expiration of the shot clock to key a half-ending 6-2 run by the Huskies and give UW a 26-21 lead at the break.
Washington opened the third quarter strong, using a 10-5 run over the first three minutes capped by a three-pointer from Peterson to go up 36-26 in the early going. That triple would mark the sixth-straight made bucket for the Huskies going back to the second quarter. But the Cougars responded with a 7-2 run over the next two minutes, pulling to within five at 38-33 with 4:37 on the clock. The teams would exchange buckets the rest of the way with the Huskies leading 42-37 after the third.
The Huskies opened the third with a three-pointer from Peterson, but saw the Cougars respond with a three on their next trip to start a 10-0 run to take back the lead at 47-45 at the 7:11 mark. The lead was short-lived, though as the Huskies got a bucket from Melgoza to re-tie the game the next trip down, but WSU would answer right back with eight-straight to take a 55-47 with 3:18 left. Melgoza got a three-point play to ignite the crowd and pull it back to a five-point game at 55-50 with 2:21 left, but that would be as close as the Huskies would get as Washington State just seemed to be unable to miss down the stretch for the 66-59 win.
Washington remains home for its next two games, hosting Arizona State on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7:00 p.m. at Alaska Airlines Arena.
