February 07, 2016 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE – Washington couldn't hold a big first-half lead, falling at home to Oregon, 75-63. The Dawgs (16-7, 7-5 Pac-12) led by as many as 17, but could not stop an onslaught from behind the 3-point line from the Ducks (17-6, 6-6) in the second half.
Kelsey Plum led all scorers with 26 points, but it was the 13-27 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc from Oregon that made the difference.
The Dawgs started quickly, scoring the first nine points to take an early lead. Plum scored eight in the quarter as the Huskies led by as many as 13 and had an 18-10 margin at the end of one.
The Huskies continued to shoot it well in the second quarter, finishing the half at 44.8 percent (13-29). Washington also dug in at the defensive end as the Ducks shot just 28.6 percent (8-28). The Dawgs held Oregon All-America candidate Jillian Alleyne without a point in the half.
Plum led all scorers with 10 at the break, but Mathilde Gilling came off the bench to score eight on 3-4 shooting, while Talia Walton added seven. Chantel Osahor flashed her great passing from the post, notching four assists in the half to go with five rebounds.
After Osahor opened the second half with a 3-pointer to put the Huskies up 17, Oregon began their comeback. The Ducks would make 6-8 3-pointers in the quarter, cutting the Washington to just four points heading the fourth quarter.
Oregon continued their hot-shooting in the fourth, finishing by making 58.3 percent (14-24) in the second half. The Ducks were particularly good from 3-point range, making 10-15 after halftime. Oregon would go on to score 35 points in the fourth quarter, which was plenty for their best win of the season.
Plum finished 11-22 from the floor for her 26 points, while Walton was also in double figures with 11 and Gilling finished with 10 off the bench. Osahor had her typical well-rounded line with five points, 10 rebounds and six assists.
The Dawgs will head back on the road next week, traveling to Los Angeles to face USC and No. 14 UCLA. The Huskies open with the Trojans on Friday night with 7 p.m. game that is webcast only, followed by a Sunday showdown with the Bruins at 11 a.m. for a nationally televised game on ESPNU.
