Plum Named To 'Wade Watch' List
November 30, 2016 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE -- Senior Kelsey Plum was named to the watch list for the 2017 Wade Trophy, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced on Thursday (Dec. 1). The Wade Trophy is awarded annually to the nation's best women's basketball player in NCAA Division I competition.
The Wade Trophy — now in its 40th year — is the oldest and most prestigious national player of the year award in college women's basketball. It is named in honor of the late, legendary Delta State University head coach Lily Margaret Wade, who won three consecutive national championships with the Lady Statesmen. First awarded in 1978 by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), now known as SHAPE America, the The Wade Trophy has been presented to the WBCA NCAA Division I National Player of the Year since 2001.
Plum is currently leading the nation in scoring at 29.9 points per game and has led the Huskies to a 6-1 start to the season. Earlier this year, Plum moved into third all-time in Pac-12 scoring history, needing 111 more points to become the all-time leading scorer. The senior guard is already Washington's all-time leading scorer with 2,627 points in her collegiate career.
In addition to scoring, the Poway, Calif. native is leading the team in assists and steals while going 51-of-56 (.911) from the foul line. She is also second on the team in three-pointers (24).
Plum is one of five Pac-12 players on the Wade Watch List, joining Kristine Anigwe (Cal), Jordin Canada (UCLA), Erica McCall (Stanford) and Sydney Wiese (Oregon State).
The "Wade Watch" list of candidates for The Wade Trophy is composed of 25 players selected by the WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches' All-America Selection Committee. The committee will review the list in January to determine if additional players will be added based on their play during the first half of the 2016-17 season.
