SEATTLE – Washington stayed perfect on the season, beating San Diego State 80-51 on Monday night at Alaska Airlines Arena. The Dawgs improved to 4-0 after another blowout victory on their home court.
The win is the 14th in 16 chances dating back to last year at home for the Huskies. The 4-0 start is also the best since 2005 when the Dawgs began 5-0.
The Dawgs were led by Kelsey Plum who poured in 32 points, while adding five assists. She came into the night averaging 27.7 points, which led the nation, but upped that to 28.8 after her 11th-career 30-point game.
Talia Walton was also big, scoring 19 points on 8-13 shooting, while Brianna Ruiz made it three Huskies in double figures with 12.
The Dawgs got off to a good start, just as they have at every game at home so far this season. Katie Collier scored eight points in the quarter on 3-3 shooting as the Huskies led 21-13.
In the second quarter, Washington led by as many as 17, but the Aztecs closed on a 7-0 run to trail just 32-23 at the half. Plum led Huskies with 10 at the break, while Collier and Ruiz had eight each.
After halftime, San Diego State made their run, cutting the lead to 43-40 with 3:37 to play in the third quarter. The Dawgs responded, however, as Walton made a pair of 3-pointers and the Huskies got out in transition to retake a comfortable margin. At the end of three, UW led 56-42, closing on a 13-2 run.
The fourth quarter was all Huskies, outscoring the Aztecs, 24-9. Plum scored 15 in the quarter as the Huskies ran away with it. The Dawgs finished shooting 55.4 percent (31-56), while holding SDSU to just 39.6 percent (19-48).
Washington was also the better team on the glass, outrebounding the Aztecs, 32-22. Chantel Osahor led Washington in rebounding without eight, although the totals were smaller than normal as San Diego State liked to get deep in shot clocks. The Dawgs forced 18 turnovers, scoring 24 points off the SDSU miscues.
Next up for the Huskies is a trip to Las Vegas for the South Point Shootout. The Dawgs will play No. 23 Syracuse and Texas Tech on consecutive nights in the desert. The games will be Friday, Nov. 27 and Saturday Nov. 28, both tipping off at 6:45 p.m., PT. Live webcasts of each game will be available and linked on gohuskies.com.
