November 19, 2015 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE – Washington improved to 2-0 on the season, knocking off Seattle U. 96-55 in the matchup of crosstown rivals. Kelsey Plum led the Dawgs with 26 points, but it was Chantel Osahor who was the player of the game with 12 points and 20 rebounds.
The 20 rebounds were the most for a Washington player this century as she became just the fourth player to reach that mark. Margie Nielsen is the Dawgs all-time single-game rebounding leader with 25, a number she reached twice as part of her nine games of at least 20 boards.
Osahor reached 20 rebounds in just 26 minutes, while adding 12 points on 5-12 shooting to go with four assists and three steals.
As a team, the Dawgs shot 42.7 percent (35-82), but held the Redhawks to just 25.4 percent (17-67). Washington also hammered Seattle U. on the glass, 61-39.
The Dawgs jumped out to a big early lead, scoring 12 of the game's first 15 points. Washington led 21-10 after the first quarter and would not see the lead dip below double digits the rest of the way.
Plum led Washington with 13 points in the first half, but Osahor was the key player, doing a little bit of everything. The junior post player had 10 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals before the break. She scored at will inside, while also getting her teammates involved and grabbing the tough defensive boards.
Talia Walton was also good in the first half as she continued to have the hot hand, picking up where she left off in the opener when she poured in 33 points. She made 4-5 shots, including a 3-pointer and was a perfect 3-3 from the foul line.
After the break, The Dawgs got scoring across the board as 10 players finished with at least two points. Plum's 26 was season best, but she also added a game-high six assists. Walton finished with 18 points, shooting and efficient 7-10 from the floor.
Washington also got a career-high four points from Mackenzie Wieburg, while Khalia Lark was just one off her career best with nine.
The Huskies will now head out on the road for the first time this season, traveling to Fresno State to face the Bulldogs. The Friday night tip will be at 7 p.m. for a game streamed on the Mountain West Network website (themw.com).
