EUGENE, Ore. - After two days and multiple rain delays, the No. 7/8 Huskies and No. 19/15 Ducks finally got two Pac-12 games in in Eugene, Ore., Wednesday. Oregon won game one, 5-3 and UW took game two, 6-3 in nine innings. UW improves to 34-7 overall and 5-6 in league play.
"We competed hard both days," said head coach Heather Tarr. "We're finding our way. It was nice to see Jenna Clifton single and come through in the ninth inning in game two. The rain delays were crazy. It was great practice at being uncomfortable. We're getting better every day."
Game One - No. 19/15 Oregon 5, No. 7/8 UW 3
In a game that started Tuesday afternoon, UW went up 1-0 after its portion of the firsts as senior Kimi Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.) singled to right field and sophomore Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) scored.
The host Ducks responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning on a home run by Kailee Cuico.
Hayward scored the second run in the third after singling. Senior Nikia Williams (Mission Viejo, Calif.) drove her in with a double.
In the top of the fifth with one out, the game went into a 3 ½ hour rain delay. The game was supposed to start at 9 a.m. Wednesday but was pushed back again due to heavy rain. The tarp started coming off the field around 11:20 a.m. and the game resumed at approximately 11:50 a.m.
With one out in the fifth, UW got a run to tie the game. Sophomore Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.) walked and Pohlman singled. Sophomore Whitney Jones (Upland, Calif.) pinch ran and scored on an error by the second baseman.
In the bottom of fifth, Oregon re-took the lead for good with two runs, 5-3. After a walk to Samantha Pappas, Christie Nieto hit the game-winning two-run home run.
UW had nine hits, led by Pohlman with three and Hayward and freshman Kimberlee Souza (Waialua, Hawai'i) with two each.
Freshman Kasey Stanchek (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) got the start for UW but only pitched one-third of an inning after allowing three runs on three hits. Sophomore Bryana Walker (La Quinta, Calif.) entered in relief, pitching 5.2 innings, allowing two runs. She falls to 8-2 on the season.
Game Two - No. 7/8 UW 6, No. 19/15 Oregon 3 (9 innings)
Washington also had nine hits in game two, led by Inglesby with three. Inglesby got the win in the circle, pitching the complete game, allowing three runs on five hits. Jessica Moore took the loss for Oregon after winning game one.
UW went up 1-0 in the first as Williams reached on an error and came home on a sacrifice fly by Pohlman.
In the top of the fourth, sophomore Hooch Fagaly (Chino, Calif.) hit a solo home run to give UW a two-run cushion.
Inglesby pitched a no-hitter through three innings but got into some trouble in the fourth. She walked Kaylan Howard and Kelsey Chambers doubled down the left field line as Howard scored. Chambers reached third on a wild pitch. Cuico walked. Pappas singled to right as Chambers scored the tying run. Cuico scored the go-ahead run on a ground out by Alexa Peterson.
Inglesby walked and scored on a double to right by Pohlman to tie, 3-3 in the fifth.
The next three innings would be scoreless as the two teams would enter extra innings. In the top of the eighth, another rain delay stopped the game for an hour with two outs and the Huskies at bat.
The Huskies got a burst of energy after the last rain delay, scoring three runs in the ninth for the victory. Senior Jenna Clifton (Glendale, Ariz.) pinch hit and singled to left to lead the rally. Williams singled to third and Inglesby hit a three-run home run to left field.
