Rollicking Huskies Romp In 80-46 Rout Of Long Beach

SEATTLE - In a different era, a visit from Long Beach State would be the hallmark of any Washington women's basketball non-conference game. Even though the 49ers aren't the same program as the one that reached back-to-back Final Fours in 1987 and 1988, the Huskies still wanted to bring their "A" game to Alaska Airlines Arena on Sunday.
Jazmine Davis scored a career-high 18 points to lead the Huskies to an 80-46 win over LBSU, masterminding a UW offense that often operated at peak efficiency. The freshman point guard was particularly accurate from deep, hitting all four of her attempts from 3-point range.
After the game, Washington coach Kevin McGuff said he was pleased "at times" with how well the Huskies played. Yet he balked from saying he was satisfied with the win. The first-year coach still has a high set of expectations after a successful nine-year run at Xavier, which included multiple NCAA berths, meaning the W alone is often not enough to satisfy McGuff.
"It's nice to win," McGuff said. "But I really want our players to understand the idea of getting better. What we talked about after the game, even though our numbers were pretty good we still have to make great strides in both defense and rebounding."
One area where the Huskies (5-2) had few issues was on offense. Washington shot a season-high 54 percent from the field as 10 different players scored in the rout.
Regina Rogers' torrid stretch cooled somewhat, with the senior scoring just 12 points and six rebounds. In her two previous games, Rogers had set corresponding career-highs with 26 and 27 points. LBSU (2-6) set an agenda to limit her looks from the floor, often double-teaming Rogers the second she entered the low post.
But this time, plenty of Huskies had her back. Jeneva Anderson set a personal best with nine points. Mollie Williams reached a new season-high with eight, including a 3-pointer in the second half. Charmaine Barlow added eight points and dished off four assists, tying a career-high.
The 49ers simply couldn't keep up.
Long Beach reached Seattle on the tail end of a seven-game road trip, which included two separate swings to New York State. The wear-and-tear was on display in the second half, as the Huskies weaved in, out and around the 49ers full-court trap. Alex Sanchez had 20 points to lead Long Beach State, doing most of her damage in the structure of the 49ers' motion offense. But she found little support as the Dawgs put the clamps on the 49ers in general, holding them to just 29 percent shooting from the floor.
Surprisingly, this was the first UW win over Long Beach State. The Huskies were 0-7 against the Big West school coming into the matchup, with two of those losses coming in the NCAA Tournament. LBSU isn't the same program these days, but the Huskies wanted to continue their hot start in non-conference play to continue with the McGuff mantra of improving each and every day.
Rogers was asked about this after the game, knowing her coach has elevated standards. "I think he just expects the best," Rogers said. "He's been around the best. So for us, even if we're doing well, there's always something we can work on. We feel as if there's always room for improvement."
