Women's Volleyball Falls to UCLA

 

October 16, 1998

Los Angeles - The UCLA women's volleyball team defeated the University of Washington, 3-1, in Pauley Pavilion tonight to post its third consecutive victory.

Game scores in the Pac-10 Conference match were 15-6, 15-3, 7-15, 15-8. UCLA improved to 6-9 overall and 5-3 in Pac-10 action while Washington fell to 4-8 overall and 3-5 in league play. As a team the Bruins out hit the Huskies .344 to .210 and also posted more digs (65 to 46), but Washington had more blocks 14-10.

Individual standouts tonight for UCLA were many as rookie Kristee Porter again led the team in kills with her seventh 20-plus outing and a total of 22 tonight. Fellow rookie Ashley Bowles drilled 20 kills for the sixth time and also registered a match-high 17 digs. The Bruins inside game continued to be hot as well as sophomores Elisabeth Bachman and Amy Nihipali put down 15 and 13 kills respectively. Bachman hit .387 and led the Bruins with eight blocks, including two solo.

Nihipali hit. a team- high .391. Freshman setter Erika Selsor provided 60 assists, put away three kills of her own and collected 11 digs.

Washington's Kristina Laffling totaled a match-high 23 kills, while hitting a team-best .327. Leslie Tuiasosopo posted a match-high nine blocks, and Lisa Underhill added 11 kills each for the Huskies.

UCLA returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 18 hosting Washington State in a 1:00 p.m. match at Pauley Pavilion. Washington plays across town at USC, who lost, 3- 1, tonight to Washington State.
