SEATTLE - Two-time Husky All-American Denise Dy begins her senior season at, appropriately enough, the ITA All-America Championships this week in Pacific Palisades, California. One of the three major national championships each year, the All-America main draw begins on Thursday, October 6, though qualifying rounds have been going on for the past week. Dy, the nation's fourth-ranked singles player, was an automatic entry into the main draw, where she will be the No. 4 overall seed. Last year she advanced all the way to the semifinals at this event, matching Venise Chan's 2009 semifinal run as the best ever by a Husky. The tournament is held at the Riviera Tennis Club with the finals on October 9. The main draw will feature 32 players. Dy will have a tough first round challenge in SMU's Marta Lesniak, who is ranked 10th in the preseason poll. Last year, the two played in the quarterfinal round of this same tournament, with Dy needing to go all the way to a third-set tiebreak to get the win. Over the past two seasons, Dy has gone 56-13 to establish herself as one of the nation's elites. She was ranked in the top-10 nationally all year last season en route to her second straight All-America singles award, and she also earned doubles All-America honors after making the NCAA Quarterfinals with now-graduated teammate Venise Chan. |
