Kraszewski Upsets Top-Ranked Seed

Sept. 21, 2000

SEATTLE, WA -- University of Washington senior Kristina Kraszewski upset the top-seeded women's pro player, Meghann Shaughnessy, in the first round of the $75,000 USTA Women's Challenger in Kirkland. Kraszewski, who was ranked No. 1 on the collegiate level for much of last year and ended up No. 6, defeated Shaughnessy 7-5, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (4). Shaughnessy entered the tournament listed No. 46 in the ATP rankings.

Kraszewski, who came into the tournament ranked 275th in the world, competed earlier this summer in the women's pro tennis tour. She reached the quarterfinals in both Salt Lake City and the Bronx and won the $25,000 ITF tournament in Winnipeg, Canada, which qualified her for the upcoming Japan Open.

The second-round matches will begin Thursday morning at 10 a.m., where Kraszewski will face unseeded Alina Jidkova of Russia. Semifinals for singles and doubles are Saturday at 10 a.m. Singles finals are Sunday at 1 p.m., with doubles finals immediately after.
