SEATTLE - Husky All-American Denise Dy successfully defended her Washington State Open title this afternoon at the Seattle Tennis Club, winning in straight sets in a match twice delayed by rain. Dy then came back later to add the doubles title to her trophy case, teaming up with former UW All-American Dea Sumantri for the win.

In singles, Dy, the top seed, faced second-seeded Story Tweedie-Yates, a former standout college player for Stanford and TCU. The players were tied at 4-all in the first set when a misting rain halted things. When play resumed, Dy broke serve and then held for the first set win.

In the second set, Dy fell behind 0-3 but another rain delay slowed Tweedie-Yates' momentum, and Dy was able to rally back to win seven of the next nine games to take the set, 7-5, and finish off her second-straight championship run.

In the open doubles final, Dy and Sumantri faced off against Amy Markhoff and Irina Tereschenko, again a match-up of the top two seeded teams. Sumantri was an All-American for UW in 2003 and 2004; Dy and teammate Venise Chan became the first Husky All-Americans since Sumantri when both earned the honor this year.

Sumantri and Dy wore matching outfits with one exception: each had one purple Huskies sock knee high on opposite legs. The two showed great chemistry despite playing together for the first time, and rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 victory.

Right after the women's doubles final, former men's tennis standout Alex Vlaski took to the show court along with his doubles partner Justin Bower. Vlaski and Bower had little trouble claiming the title via a 6-2, 6-0 win over Angelo Niculescu and Ryan Pang.

In the men's open singles final, 2009 graduate David Chu had his excellent run ended by top-seeded Roman Borvanov. Chu, the first unseeded player in recent memory to reach the final, couldn't quite muster another upset, falling 6-3, 6-1.

In the mixed doubles final, former Husky Ashley Anderson teamed up with Filipp Pogostkin to advance to the final, but they were upended by Tereschenko and Jeffrey Mullen, 6-3, 6-4. Anderson was on the Husky squad the past three seasons but is headed to Loyola Marymount for 2010-11.

Also prevailing on Sunday was former Husky head coach Doug Ruffin, who had a straight set victory in the finals of the men's 60 singles division.

Go Huskies!
