Three Members of the Women's Tennis Team Advance on First Day of the Pac-10 Tournament

OJAI, Calif. - Washington freshman Claire Carter (Nottingham, England) continued her winning streak as she advanced to the quarterfinals on Thursday at the Pac-10 Singles and Doubles Championships at the Ojai Valley Inn Tennis Center. The conference tournament is being held in conjunction with the 101st annual Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament in Ojai, Calif.
Carter, who is currently ranked 42nd nationally, won her opening round match when she quickly disposed of USC's Tiffany Brymer, 6-2, 7-6(5). She then cruised to a straight set victory over 74th-ranked Megan Yeats of Arizona State, 6-1, 6-3, in the Round of 16. The tall righty extended her winning streak to nine consecutive matches, while upping her overall record to 27-6. With today's victories, Carter is now just one win shy of tying senior Kristina Kraszewski (Torrance, Calif.) for second on the Husky all-time single season wins list.
In other singles main draw action, junior Erin Boisclair (Agoura Hills, Calif.) eased past Washington State's Stacey McKenna, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, in her opening round match. Boisclair then fell short in her bid to advance to the quarterfinals. The California native took USC's Jewel Peterson to three grueling sets before coming up short in the third set, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Junior Ilona Kordonskaya (Los Angeles, Calif.) lost a tough contest in the opening round when she was topped by Stanford's Emilia Anderson, 7-5, 6-4.
Playing out of the invitational bracket, sophomore Colleen Gray (Granite Bay, Calif.) downed Courtney Nagle of Oregon, 6-1, 7-5, in the opening round, while freshman Erin Hoe (Miliani, Hawaii) nuzzled past Oregon's Valerie Young, 7-6, 6-1. In the Round of 16, Gray cruised by Washington State's Moniek van de Ven, 6-3, 6-0, while Hoe toppled UCLA's Mariko Fritz-Krockow, 7-6, 6-0.
Washington sophomore's Amy Allen (Edmonds, Wash.), Kathy Chi (Meridian, Idaho) and Andrea Coulter (Calgary, Canada) dropped their first round contests. Arizona State's Cindy Sureephong got the best of Allen, 6-0, 6-1. Chi (Meridian, Idaho) fell to Bernadette Bayani of USC, 6-1, 6-4, while sophomore Coulter fell victim to USC's Krissy Hamilton, 6-2, 6-3.
Singles play will continue tomorrow with quarterfinal matches beginning at 9:30 a.m. The invitational will continue at 8 a.m. Doubles action will begin Friday.
