Women's Tennis Falls to 12th-ranked Vanderbilt In First Round of USTA/ITA
Feb. 15, 2001 MADISON, Wisc. - The 21st-ranked Washington women's tennis team fell to the 12th-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores, 3-4, in the first round of the USTA/ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships Thursday, Feb. 15. The Dawgs took three of the six singles matches, while the Commodores swept the doubles action. Vanderbilt improves their record to 9-0, as Washington evens out to 3-3. The Huskies picked up three points at the No. 1-3 positions. In the top position, 24th-ranked senior Kristina Kraszewski handed 11th-ranked Julie Ditty her first lost of the dual match season, when she downed her, 7-5, 7-5. In the No. 2 spot, 51st-ranked freshman Claire Carter won her sixth-straight match as she defeated 36th-ranked Sarah Riske in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 1-0(11), while 75th-ranked sophomore Darija Klaic shut down No. 41 Jenny Miller, 7-6(5), 6-2, in the No. 3 position. Vanderbilt picked up their remaining three points at No. 4-6 singles as junior Ilona Kordonskaya fell to Kate Burson, 6-3, 6-2, in the fourth spot. In the No. 5 position, Aleke Tsoubanos picked up a big win, defeating freshman Erin Hoe, who is ranked No. 66 in the nation, 6-4, 7-6(5). Rounding out the singles competition, Kelly Schmandt downed junior Erin Boisclair, 6-0, 6-2. In the top spot of doubles action, No. 11 Kate Burson and Julie Ditty defeated No. 26 Darija Klaic and Kristina Kraszewski, 8-3. Sarah Riske and Aleke Tsoubanos collected a win by downing Claire Carter and Ilona Kordonskaya, 8-4. Vanderbilt's final doubles win came at No. 3, where Jenny Miller and Kelly Schmandt defeated Erin Boisclair and Erin Hoe, 8-5. Washington will participate in the consolation rounds of the WNITC Friday and Saturday morning at 9 a.m. The consolation round will be redrawn on Thursday night.
