No. 11 Husky Women's Tennis Team Remains Undefeated With Victory Over No. 26 Alabama
Feb. 3, 2002 SEATTLE - The 11th ranked Washington women's tennis team (4-0) earned another victory beating No. 26 Alabama 5-2. The Huskies claimed four out of the six single matches as well as two out of the three doubles matches. No. 39 Claire Carter, who played in the No. 1 position against No. 84 Selia Mathew, won in three straight sets, 6-7, 6-0, 6-1. Husky Senior Ilona Kordonskay then defeated Millie Begovic in the No. 2 position to clinch the match, 7-6, 4-6, 6-0. Also winning in the No.3 position, was junior Colleen Gray who defeated senior Jenny Ketchum in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Sophomore, Erin Hoe played a grueling match against Alabama's Sophie Cremers in the No.4 position losing 6-3, 6-3. Keeping the Husky winning streak intact was Andrea Coulter in the No.5 position, with a victory over Weyli Chang, 6-3,7-5. Making her debut, as a Husky was newcomer, Dea Sumantri from Indonesia, who lost a close match to senior Becca Baum, 7-5, 7-6 (3). In doubles play, the Huskies duo of Coulter/Hoe posted a victory in the No. 3 position to clinch the match over Ketchum/Baum, 8-4. Alabama's Begovic/Chang defeated Carter/Kordonskaya 9-8 (5) in the No. 1 position. In the No. 2 position, Gray/Sumantri teamed up to defeat Mathew/Cremers, 8-2. The Huskies are set to travel to the National Teams Indoors in Madison, WI, February 7-10, and action is scheduled for all day.
