UW Women's Tennis Victorious in Season Opener

Seattle - The 12th ranked Washington women's tennis team (1-0) earned their first victory of the season with a 6-1 win over No. 63 Boise State. The Huskies claimed all six singles matches on their way to victory over the Broncos.
No. 39 Claire Carter, who played in the No. 1 position against No. 57 Helen Lawson, tamed the Bronco 6-1, 6-1 for the victory. Husky Senior Ilona Kordonskay then upset No. 63 Renate Stoop in three straight sets, 4-6,6-2,6-4.
Also winning in the No.3 position, was junior Colleen Gray who defeated sophomore Jemima Hayward in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Sophomore, Erin Hoe played a grueling match against BSU's Erin Polowski in the No.4 position winning, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3.
Keeping the Husky winning streak intact was Andrea Coulter in the No.5 position, with a victory over Alissa Ayling, 6-3,7-5. Making her debut, as a Husky was newcomer, Dea Sumantri from Indonesia, who defeated Anna Curtolo in two sets, 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles play, the Huskies duo of Coulter/Sumantri posted a victory in the No. 3 position over Ayling/Curtolo, 8-6. BSU's No. 23 ranked Lawson/Stoop defeated Carter/Kordonskaya 8-3 in the No. 1 position and fellow Bronco players Polowski/Hayward defeated Gray/Hoe, 8-4 in the No. 2 position to conclude doubles action.
The Huskies are set to take on No.44 ranked San Diego State next Friday, February 1, at 2 p.m. followed by a Saturday match vs. No. 28 Washington State and a Sunday finale against No. 26 Alabama. The matches are scheduled to be outdoors in the Quillian Stadium weather permitting, but will be moved to the Nordstrom Tennis Center if necessary.
