Darija Klaic Finishes Strong On Day Two of Pac-10 Indoor Women's Tennis Tournament
Jan. 14, 2001 SEATTLE - Sophomore Darija Klaic of the 26th-ranked Washington women's tennis team will advance to the championship match in the Flight I singles consolation bracket on day two of the Pac-10 Indoor Women's Tennis Tournament at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center on Sunday. The tournament concludes tomorrow at 9 a.m. In the semifinals of Flight I singles, senior Kristina Kraszewski lost to 20th-ranked Laura Granville of Stanford, 6-3, 7-6(7). Granville will face Arizona State's Adria Engel in the finals tomorrow. In the first round of Flight IV singles, freshman Kristen Auten, lost to USC's Krissy Hamilton-Heinberg, 6-2, 6-0, while Caroline Christian of USC defeated freshman Anna Pearson, 6-3, 6-0. Sophomore Kathy Chi downed Stanford's Lizzie Bennett in three sets, 6-1, 1-6, 6-2, while sophomore Amy Allen lost to Jennifer Donahue of UCLA, 7-5, 6-3. Chi lost to Washington State's Stacey McKenna, 6-0, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals of Flight I singles consolation bracket, Klaic won her round after Arizona's Michelle Gough was forced to retire early due to an injury. Klaic then went on to down UCLA's Zana Zlebnik in the semifinals. She will take on Raquel Kops-Jones of California in the championship match tomorrow. Junior Ilona Kordonskaya defeated Lauren Fisher of UCLA, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 in the semifinals of Flight II singles consolation before losing to Stanford's Lauren Barnikow, 6-3, 6-2. In the quarterfinals of Flight III singles consolation, sophomore Andrea Coulter lost to California's Catherine Lynch, while Nicole Havlicek defeated freshman Erin Hoe. In the quarterfinals of Flight I doubles competition, freshman Claire Carter and Kordonskaya lost to Stanford's Lauren Barnikow and Lauren Kalvaira, 8-6. Meanwhile, Coulter and Hoe fell to 15th-ranked Maureen Diaz and Melissa Esmero of USC, 8-3 All nine Pac-10 teams that sponsor women's tennis (Oregon State does not) are represented in the event, which features four singles flights and three doubles flights. The top three singles flights only will include a consolation bracket. There are still tickets available for tomorrow. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for children and seniors. UW students are admitted free with their I.D. Teams may be admitted for $1 per member with the accompaniment of one paying adult.
