Huskies Make Third Trip To Michigan Invite To Start 2012
Jan. 12, 2012
SEATTLE - The Husky women's tennis team kicks off the new year with one more individual format tournament before delving into team match play next week, as Washington makes its third trip to the Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor. Play runs from Saturday to Monday with the Huskies getting one singles match and one doubles match in each day. Joining the 27th-ranked Huskies is 10th-ranked Michigan, 13th-ranked Georgia Tech, and 24th-ranked Arkansas. The uniquely styled tournament simulates a dual match format with teams playing singles or doubles against each other with an expanded one through eight lineup in singles and one through four in doubles. Individuals earn points for victories based on their spot in the lineup. Winning at No. 1 singles earns eight points and winning at No. 8 singles earns one point. Individuals are then crowned champions rather than teams. Last season, Denise Dy and former Husky Venise Chan won the doubles title with a 3-0 record at No. 1 doubles. It will be a challenging weekend for the Huskies, which should set them up well for their home opener next Friday, Jan. 20, against Sacramento State. Michigan has four players ranked in singles led by No. 36 Emina Bektas. Jillian O'Neill is the highest of two ranked Yellow Jackets at No. 45. The Razorbacks currently have no ranked singles players but are always a talented team. Below is the schedule of match-ups for the weekend. Saturday, Jan. 14 Sunday, Jan. 15 Monday, Jan. 16 |
