One member of the 26th-ranked Washington women's tennis team advanced in singles competition, along with four doubles teams on the first day of the ninth annual Pac-10 Indoor Tennis Tournament at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center on Friday. The tournament continues tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
In Flight I singles, senior 78th-ranked Kristina Kraszewski downed California's 38th-ranked Raquel Kops-Jones, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, before defeating Sara Walker of UCLA, 7-6, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, 28th-ranked sophomore Darija Klaic lost to Stanford's 21st-ranked Keiko Tokuda, 6-0, 6-2.
In the first round of play in the Flight II singles bracket, freshman Claire Carter defeated Anna Dybicz of Washington State in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, before losing to USC's Maureen Diaz, 6-4, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. California's Christina Fusano downed Washington junior Ilona Kordonskaya, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.
In Flight III singles, 43rd-ranked freshman Erin Hoe lost to Stanford's Amelia Anderson, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4. Melissa Esmero of USC defeated sophomore Andrea Coulter, who recently transferred from William and Mary, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, in the first round of play.
In Flight I doubles, team Klaic and Kraszewski downed Washington State's Erica Perkins and Tamara Filipovic, 8-1, while Carter and Kordonskaya defeated Adeline Arnaud and Janice Nyland of Oregon, 8-2.
In Flight II doubles, Coulter and Hoe shut down Vickie Gunnarsson and Jeanette Mattsson of Oregon, 8-2, while freshman Kristen Auten and sophomore Kathy Chi lost to California's Sekita Grant and Raquel Kops-Jones, 8-0. Sophomore Amy Allen and freshman Anna Pearson lost to California's Sekita Grant and Raquel Kops-Jones, 8-0.
Flight IV singles and singles consolation will begin tomorrow morning.
All nine Pac-10 teams that sponsor women's tennis (Oregon State does not) are represented in the event, which features four singles flights and three doubles flights. The top three singles flights only will include a consolation brakcet.
There are still tickets available for tomorrow. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for children and seniors. UW students are admitted free with their I.D. Teams may be admitted for $1 per member with the accompaniment of one paying adult.
