Dy And Chan Advance But Rain Wins Again At Regionals
Oct. 24, 2010
PALO ALTO, Calif. - Once again it was a rain-shortened day for the Husky women's tennis team at the Taube Tennis Center, as the ITA Northwest Regional Championships continued to be delayed throughout Saturday. Still, UW's All-American duo of Denise Dy and Venise Chan moved on early in the day with wins in singles and doubles before play was suspended. The top two seeded players in the singles draw, Chan and Dy advanced into the round of 16 in singles. Dy, the defending champ and top seed, defeated Jocelyn Davis of Cal Poly, 6-1, 6-2. Chan, seeded second, competed for the first time today and had two matches on her plate. She defeated Jessica Marie Agra of Santa Clara, 6-2, 6-2, in the first round, then held on against Sacramento State's Clarissa Baca, 6-0, 4-6, 7-5. The two have also gone through to the round of 16 as a doubles pair, despite not having played a single point thus far. After a first round bye, their second round opponents withdrew because of injury. Junior Samantha Smith had a tough go in her second round singles match, falling in straight sets to eighth-seeded Annie Gorannson of California. Smith and freshman Andjela Nemcevic were barely edged in doubles by No. 7-seeds Li and Tan of Stanford, and another Cardinal pair, fourth-seeded Gibbs and Ahn, eliminated seniors Vanja Radunovic and Lina Xu from the doubles draw. Xu remains alive in singles as well.
