Lukac Wins Consolation Draw As First Tourney Wraps
Oct. 14, 2012
**Correction: Grace Ysidora was initially reported to have lost her consolation final. She was the winner.**
MORAGA, Calif. - Sophomore Julija Lukac finished off a four-match run on Sunday to win the white singles flight at the St. Mary's Invitational, and freshman Grace Ysidora did the same in the red consolation flight, as the Husky women's tennis team wrapped its first tourney of the season. Scores from the tournament were unavailable until Monday morning.
It was another busy day on Sunday with seven Huskies on the courts. The last Husky competing for a main draw title was freshman Brianna Kemp in the blue singles flight. Kemp posted three wins to reach the final, but was unable to overcome Melissa Kobayakawa of UC Davis in the finals, falling 6-2, 6-1.
In the red flight consolation bracket, it was erroneously reported on Saturday that freshman Grace Ysidora had retired from her match. She in fact advanced, and matched up with teammate Elianne Douglas-Miron in the consolation semifinals on Sunday. The two split the first two sets, with Ysidora coming out on top in the super-tiebreak, 6-2, 4-6, (10-6). The consolation final then went to another super-tiebreak, and again Ysidora got the edge, defeating Louise Oxnevad of Cal Poly, 3-6, 7-5, (10-8).
Lukac had little trouble in her consolation semifinal against Erica Medlin of San Jose State, as she was up 6-1, 2-0 when Medlin retired. In the consolation final, Lukac rolled once again, defeating Isabell Klingert of Gonzaga, 6-2, 6-1.
The Huskies will be heading right back to the Bay Area this week for their next tournament, the ITA Northwest Regional Championships held at Stanford, starting this Friday.
