Oct. 12, 2012
MORAGA, Calif. - A busy and rain-delayed first day of the fall tennis season wrapped up after 10 p.m. tonight, with all nine of the Husky women's tennis players eventually getting on the courts at the St. Mary's Fall Invitational. Four UW freshmen made their collegiate debuts today in Moraga. The Dawgs picked up some solid wins in singles and doubles, and had a couple near misses against tough opposition. The tournament continues through Sunday. In the top singles draw, the red bracket, junior Andjela Nemcevic got her season off on a good note, as she topped Cal Poly's Louise Oxnevard, the No. 8 seed, 7-5, 6-1. UW had three more entries in the top bracket, but all three lost in the first round. Sophomore Capucine Gregoire was edged, 6-4, 6-4 by third-seeded Klara Fabikova of Cal. Fabikova was ranked the No. 2 newcomer this year by the ITA. Making their Husky debuts in the top singles flight were Grace Ysidora and Elianne Douglas-Miron. Ysidora won the first set but then was overcome in three sets by St. Mary's Danielle Flores, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Douglas-Miron had the toughest draw, going against second-seeded, and 51st-ranked Jenny Jullien of St. Mary's, and the Gael prevailed, 6-1, 6-1. In the white singles bracket, sophomore Natali Coronel pulled out a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) win over Ellie Edles of UC Davis, but sophomore Julija Lukac lost a 7-5, 6-2 match to Liz Searl of St. Mary's. Freshmen Brianna Kemp and Sarah Steele both played their first Husky matches in the blue bracket. Kemp was victorious, 7-5, 6-0, over Chyna Brown of Sacramento State, but Steele fell, 6-3, 6-2, to another Hornet, Saskia Angerer. In doubles play, Nemcevic teamed with sophomore Riko Shimizu and they won their opener, 8-4, over a USF team, but fell in the quarterfinals to the top-seeded duo from St. Mary's. Douglas-Miron and Ysidora were also 1-1 in the top draw. In the white doubles draw, Lukac and Coronel moved into the semifinals with two wins. They defeated the top-seeded Cal Poly team of McPike and Bott in their first match, 8-4, then rolled to an 8-2 win over a Gonzaga duo. Kemp and Steele teamed together but were 0-2.
