BEAVERTON, Ore. - Husky All-American Venise Chan took part in the GPTC/Nike Tennis Championships of Oregon over the past week, and walked away with the singles title on Sunday. Chan defeated a pair of college standouts in the final two rounds to win the tourney, part of the USTA Pacific Northwest Summer Circuit.

Chan won five matches in four days, cruising through the first three rounds losing only a total of three games. She defeated Mikayla Rodgers in the first round, then ousted Gonzaga's Clare Dodge in round two. In the third round, Chan blanked Arianna Fardanesh, 6-0, 6-0.

Moving on to the semifinals, Chan faced Suzie Matzenauer, who finished the 2009-10 season ranked 104th in singles for Cal Poly. Chan pulled out a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win to move on to the final where she faced Arizona State's Kelcy McKenna. The Sun Devil finished last season ranked 79th in the NCAA and is a former ITA All-American Championships winner. The final followed a similar pattern as the semis, with Chan overcoming a second set hiccup to win 6-3, 0-6, 6-3.

Chan is spending much of the summer in Beaverton doing an internship with Nike. The two-time First Team All-Pac-10 performer is coming off her first All-America honor. She was one of just five women to advance at least to the Round of 16 in all three college tennis major championships.

Go Huskies!
