No. 2 UCLA Tops No. 47 Dawgs
Jan. 27, 2013
LOS ANGELES -- Just a few hours after defeating No. 43 South Florida, No. 47 Washington was back at it, falling to No. 2 UCLA, 4-0. The Dawgs, with a spot at the ITA National Indoors on the line, came up short against one of the top teams in the country playing on its home court.
The loss dropped Washington to 4-1 as they suffered their first loss of the dual-match season. The Bruins improved to 2-0 and will advance to the Indoor Nationals in Charlottesville, Va.
Washington began by dropping the doubles point as UCLA won 8-1 at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. The Bruin team of Robin Anderson and Skylar Morton, ranked No. 16, defeated Elianne Douglas-Miron and Riko Shimizu, 8-1. UCLA clinched as Kyle McPhillips and Chanelle Van Nguyen defeated Julija Lukac and Andjela Nemcevic, 8-3.
In singles, UCLA won the first three matches to finish to clinch a 4-0 win. No. 6 singles player, Anderson defeated Ysidora, 6-1, 6-0. Next, Morton defeated Shimizu at No. 6, 6-1, 6-2, followed by Catherine Harrison beating Lukac, 6-2, 6-1.
The other three singles matches were not finished as UCLA had done enough to move on. Washington dealt with the unfortunate weather situation as it was forced to finish Saturday's match on Sunday morning, while UCLA was fully rested.
Next up for the Huskies is a return trip to Southern California. The Dawgs will face San Diego State on Friday, February 1, at 2 p.m. and Saint Mary's on Saturday, February 2, at noon. Both matches will be at San Diego State's Aztec Tennis center.
