A Day Later, UW Closes Out South Florida

LOS ANGELES -- A day after being suspended due to rain, No. 47 Washington defeated No. 43 South Florida at the ITA Kickoff, 4-2. The win moved Washington forward to face No. 2 at a time to be determined later Sunday. The Dawgs won the doubles point on Saturday and entered play Sunday morning needing three singles wins. USF won the first match at No. 3 singles to tie things up, but Andjela Nemcevic put the Dawgs back on top at No. 2 singles. She won convincingly over Loreto Alonso, 6-3, 6-3. USF tied it up at 2-2 after Katie Vesnina defeated Grace Ysidora at No. 1 singles, but then it was all Washington as they closed out the match. Capucine Gregoire won at No. 5 over Paula Montoya, 6-2, 6-2, to put UW on the verge of the victory. Closing things out was Riko Shimizu who defeated Alessandra Bonte, 6-3, 6-4. The Win at No. 6 singles clinched the 4-2 win and the final singles match was not finished. Washington will now have a quick turnaround before facing No. 2 UCLA later today. The Dawgs will be given ample rest and the approximate match time is 2:30 p.m. The Bruins closed out San Diego on Saturday and have not played Sunday.
