Women's Tennis Opens Season with a Win

SEATTLE, WA -- The Washington women's tennis team started the season off with an 8-1 win over Portland (0-1). The Huskies (1-0), ranked 42nd in the latest ITA poll, hold a 9-0 edge in the all-time series versus the Pilots.
Washington went undefeated in singles-match play. Leading the dawg pack was sophomore Kristina Kraszewski. Currently ranked 22nd in the nation, Kraszewski cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Portland's Jane Clarke in No.1 singles. This win raised Kraszewski's overall record to 7-3. In No.2 singles, freshman Ilona Kordonskaya recorded her first Husky win in dual-match play by defeating Portland's Stacey Stewart 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles action, Kraszewski and Kordonskaya teamed to fill the No.1 doubles spot. This Husky duo defeated Clarke and Erin Smith 8-2 to raise their overall record to 5-3. The only Washington loss came at the No.3 doubles slot when Portland's duo of Katy Smith and Samantha Kluger beat the Husky tandem of Hrafnhildur Hannesdottir and Tahnee Hoag 8-5.
Next week the Huskies host Idaho on Saturday, Jan. 23, at noon. All matches will be played at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center. Scoring Summary Portland 1 Washington 8
