National Champs To Hold Open Practices This Weekend
Oct. 15, 2009
SEATTLE - The defending national champion Washington softball team will open its practices this weekend to the public, allowing fans to watch early-season preparations for the 2010 title defense.
The Huskies will practice on Saturday, Oct. 17 and Sunday, Oct. 18 at Husky Softball Stadium from Noon-2:30 p.m. both days and fans are welcome to check out both sessions. In the event of inclement weather, practices will be moved to the Dempsey Indoor Facility, located adjacent to Husky Softball Stadium.
Fans are reminded that the use of video or camera equipment, including cell phone cameras, is not permitted during practice sessions.
The Huskies, who won the program's first National Championship in 2009, return six starters and 12 letterwinners in 2010, including National Player of the Year and Women's College World Series Most Valuable Player, Danielle Lawrie. Other key players returning in 2010 are WCWS All-Tournament selections Morgan Stuart, Niki Williams and Kimi Pohlman as well as Canadian National Team member Jenn Salling.
The practices will also be a chance for fans to get a peak at the six freshmen who will try to fill the shoes of the seven seniors who departed last season as National Champions. Three of the six rookies are from in-state - Amanda Fitzsimmons, Baily Harris and Maggie Wagner - while the other three (Jerrin Faasua, Hooch Fagaly, Shawna Wright) are from California.
UW has completed its 2009 fall schedule of games, going a perfect 6-0 and outscoring opponents by a combined 71-4 while hitting nine home runs in the six games.
