Salling A Finalist For Lowe's Senior CLASS Award
March 28, 2011
SEATTLE - Ten NCAA student-athletes who excel both on and off the field were announced as finalists today for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award in softball and UW’s Jenn Salling is on this elite list. She was named one of 30 candidates for the award in February 2011 but has now made it to the final round as a top-10 finalist. Salling, a shortstop from Port Coquitlam, B.C. was the fourth candidate for the award in Washington softball history but is only the second in the school’s softball history to be named a finalist. Washington’s first finalist was Dominique Lastrapes, who was a member of the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award Senior All-American First-Team in 2007. Washington senior Jenna Hagglund was also a finalist for the award in volleyball this school year. She is majoring in anthropology and, with a 3.06 GPA, is set to graduate in December of 2011. She is a 2010 Academic All-Pac-10 Honorable mention selection and was on the Dean’s List last quarter. On the field, Salling was a First-Team All-American in 2010 and also earned All-Pacific Region and All-Pac-10 honors. She was a Top 25 finalist for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year and is a member of the Canadian National Team. Salling was a part of the 2009 National Championship team and the 2010 Pac-10 Championship team. In the community, Salling is known for tutoring children, working camps, giving lessons, and being a motivational speaker. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character, and competition. The list of candidates follows this release. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
