Graves, Spediacci Earn Weekly Conference Honors
March 21, 2000 WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Washington seniors Jamie Graves and Jennifer Spediacci have been named Pac-10 Player and Pitcher of the Week for March 15-21, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. Graves, from Phoenix, Ariz., led Washington at the plate en route to the championship of the 2000 Kia Klassic, a tournament which featured six of the top 10 teams in the nation. Graves, a P/DP, hit .400 (4-10) over the weekend, including her first career home run to help the Huskies down No. 12 Oregon State in the semifinals. In that game, Graves also pitched 8.1 innings and struck out a career-high 12 batters before being relieved. Graves' .900 slugging percentage included two doubles, one of which she smacked in the midst of a three-run second inning against No. 2 Arizona in the final to jump ahead of the Wildcats for good. With three walks, Graves also had a .538 on-base percentage. On the mound, the lefty maintained a 0.00 ERA in 20.1 innings, with 20 strikeouts and two shutout wins. She blanked No. 7 Fresno State (7-0) in a complete game, allowing just three hits, and Texas (6-0) in the first round of playoffs. Spediacci, from Fremont, Calif., went 5-0, including four wins against top-25 opponents, four complete games and two shutouts, to lead Washington to the Kia Klassic championship. Spediacci allowed just one earned run in 30.2 innings, a 0.23 ERA, while striking out 46 and allowing just 13 hits. The righthander from Fremont, Calif., defeated No. 2 Arizona in the championship game (6-1), shut out No. 16 Louisiana-Lafayette (4-0) and DePaul (6-0), and handed No. 14 Iowa (5-1) and No. 12 Oregon State (5-2) defeats. Opponents batted just .123 against her. For Graves, it is the third weekly honor of her career. Spediacci wins her second award this season, seventh of her career.
