SEATTLE - The Huskies moved up in both polls this week to No. 7 in the NFCA poll and No. 9 in the ESPN.com/USA Today Softball poll after going a perfect 5-0 on the weekend at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. UW was just one of two teams to go 5-0 at the tournament, being named co-champs with New Mexico. This week, UW heads to California for first time this season to play in the 22nd Annual Campbell Cartier Classic. The tournament is co-hosted by the University of San Diego and San Diego State University. UW will open the tournament with its only game at SDSU's field vs. UCF on Friday at 11:30 a.m. UW will then play its second game of the day at USD at 5:30 vs. the Toreros. On Saturday, UW will face UC Santa Barbara at 11:30 a.m. and Boise State at 7 p.m. The Huskies conclude the tournament by taking on UC Davis on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Live stats will be available for all games on www.gohuskies.com. Scouting UCF
UCF is starting off with a 4-0 record this year after beating Ohio State, Florida A&M, Bethune Cookman and Chattanooga in the National Collegiate Softball Invitational last weekend. Head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie, in her 11th season, is beginning the year with the second-best start in school history. Junior infielder Marissa Menendez leads the team with a .455 batting average with five hits while freshman INF/OF Farrah Sullivan has six RBIs and a .750 slugging percentage to lead the team. Starting pitcher Mackenzie Sudas has a 2-0 record with a 1.50 ERA and 19 strikeouts. UW leads the overall series 2-1.
Scouting San Diego
USD's first game of the season will be against Washington on Friday. Last year 11th-year head coach Melissa McElvain led the Toreros to a 24-19 record and second place in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference. USD was voted second in the PCSC preseason poll, behind Loyola Marymount. Senior catcher Taylor Hensley, the 2011 PCSC Coastal Division Player of the Year, leads the Toreros with 36 career home runs and a .547 career slugging percentage. Senior pitcher Kaitlin Healy led the team in 2011 with a 10-7 record and 2.36 ERA. Washington is 1-0 against USD. The teams last matched up in 2006 when the Huskies beat the Toreros 15-4 at Fresno State.
UC Santa Barbara
UCSB is currently 1-5 this season, beating Utah 6-5 in the Kajikawa Classic last weekend. Head coach Brie Galicinao is in her fifth season with the Gauchos. In the 2010-11 season UCSB finished the season with a 27-26 record. To start this season, freshman Shelby Wisdom leads the Gauchos with a .357 batting average and a .471 on-base percentage. Wilson also leads the team in the circle with a 3.61 earned run average. Junior Keilani Jennings leads UCSB with a .588 slugging percentage. Washington leads the series 5-0. The two teams last met in 2010.
Scouting Boise State
Boise State started off the 2012 season with a 4-1 record at the Aggie Stampede Tournament. Senior Aubray Zell was named Mountain West Pitcher of the Week (Feb. 9-12); she went 3-0 with two complete game shutouts against Loyola Marymount and UC Davis. Zell leads the team with a 0.00 earned run average. Senior Allie Crump also threw a shutout against Nevada in a 4-0 victory. Sophomore outfielder Tara Glover leads the Broncos with a .450 batting average as well as in at-bats, 20. Head Coach Erin Thorpe is entering her fourth season at Boise State. Last year she led the Broncos to their best finish in school history: 33-20 overall finishing in a tie for second place in the WAC. The 2010-11 season also included a school record 12-game winning streak. Washington leads the series 1-0. The teams last met in 2011 in UW's 4-1 victory.
Scouting UC Davis
This will be the first-ever meeting between UW and UC Davis in softball. UC Davis is currently 1-4 this season, beating Nevada 2-0 in the Aggie Stampede Tournament last weekend. Head Coach Karen Yoder is entering her eighth season with the Aggies. Last year, UC Davis finished with a 26-29 overall record and a 15-6 mark in the Big West to finish the season tied for first. Senior Heather Zimmerman leads the team with a batting average of .400 and an on-base percentage of .400. Senior Rachel Miller leads the team in slugging percentage and recorded the team's only home run this season in a 5-3 loss to Loyola Marymount on Feb. 10th.
