Feb. 13, 2012
SEATTLE - With another comeback win over the weekend, No. 12 UW defeated Texas State 12-3 in the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., Sunday morning. Washington finished the tournament undefeated with a record of 5-0. New Mexico was the only other team that started 5-0 at the tournament. In a field of 28 teams consisting of 10 ranked teams and eight schools from the PAC-12, reigning WCWS champions and No.1 ranked Arizona State looked to be the early favorite. In the season opener, UW defeated No. 21 Nebraska 4-0 with a stellar two-hit performance from sophomore Kaitlin Inglesby. In the next two games, UW went on to defeat San Jose State and Idaho State with an explosive offense. Hooch Fagaly had a big impact against Northwestern on Saturday, leading the Dawgs with two hits and three RBIs. The sophomore helped UW overcome a 2-0 deficit to win the game 10-3. Courtney Gano and Kaitlin Inglesby were major factors in the last game of the tournament. Down 3-2 in the top of the fifth, Gano hit a crucial double and plated on a single by Kimberlee Souza. Inglesby recorded her first save of the season going into the circle in the bottom of the fifth, allowing two hits and striking out two in 2.0 innings. The Huskies won the game 12-3 and earned a share of the championship with New Mexico. Cal also went undefeated at the tournament at 4-0 but the tournament champion was based on wins and not winning percentage. The Huskies will start the season 5-0 for the second-straight year. UW will travel to San Diego to play in the Campbell Cartier Classic on Friday. They will matchup against UCF at 11:30 a.m. PT and later against the University of San Diego at 5:30 p.m. PT. |
