SEATTLE - The Washington softball team closed out the first day of the 2011 Husky Fall Classic with a 9-1 win over Seattle University Friday night at Husky Softball Stadium.

The game was shortened to six innings due to a time limit.

Leading 1-0 in the third, the Huskies increased their lead to 3-0 when Kylee Lahners singled and scored on a two-run homer to left-center field from Kaitlin Inglesby. SeattleU cut the lead to 3-1 in the fourth on an RBI single from Rogin Hardy.

In the fifth, the UW's Kimi Pohlman reached second on a bunt single and an error. After a single and a walk, Jenna Clifton belted a three-run double to left-center. A single from Jerrin Faasua plated Clifton and, after the bases were loaded once again, Whitney Jones was hit by a pitch to force in another run.

Faasua drove in the Huskies' final run in the sixth when her single plated Kimberlee Souza.

"I thought it was a good game," said UW head coach Heather Tarr. "We found a way to make some adjustments off of their first pitcher. We had two quick outs in the third inning and Kylee extended her at-bat to get the base hit and Kaitlin gets the home run, which was the key thing.

"We had some good base-running things that happened," Tarr continued. "Jenna Clifton read a changeup and advanced. We got good defense behind all three pitchers. I thought Bryana Walker threw well having a major surgery this summer. Coming back from a major injury, it's good to see her back in action."

The Fall Classic continues Saturday at 9:00 a.m. with SeattleU taking on North Idaho. The UW plays Bellevue College at 3:00 p.m. and Western Washington at 5:00. For the complete rundown of the tournament, click here.
