Season, Career Ends For Four Huskies
May 27, 2012
BERKELEY, Calif. - Sophomore Bryana Walker pitched a great game for the Huskies and the UW had several opportunities early to take a lead on No. 1 Cal, but in the end, the Golden Bears took game two and the series, 2-0, to advance to the WCWS next week in Oklahoma City.
Walker (La Quinta, Calif.) got her first start in the Super Regional, pitching a no-hitter until the fifth inning. A two-run home run by Cheyenne Cordes was the game-winner. Sophomore Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.) pitched the final inning for the Huskies.
Jolene Henderson pitched for the Bears for the second-straight day, allowing three hits with nine strikeouts and four walks in the complete game shutout.
Sophomore Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) drew a walk to lead off the first for UW on a 3-2 count. Williams singled to left with a 3-2 count just by the shortstop.
Inglesby barely missed hitting a three-run home run, just foul down the left field line. Hayward and Williams both stole bases and Pohlman walked to load the bases. With two outs, catcher Shawna Wright (Lancaster, Calif.) hit a hard ball down the left field line but Jamie Reid made a nice diving catch to get the Bears out of the inning.
Freshman Courtney Gano (West Covina, Calif.) just pulled a ball foul on the left side missing out on a home run in the second. Gano drew a walk and reached second on a throwing error by the catcher. Hayward walked with two outs but a strikeout ended the inning.
The first base runner for Cal was a walk to Cordes with two outs in the third.
Valerie Arioto reached on an error in the fourth by the Huskies and after a walk to the clean-up hitter freshman Kylee Lahners turned a nice double play to end the inning.
The Huskies had the tying run at the plate in the fifth, sixth and seventh but weren't able to complete the comeback to force a game three.
The UW ends the season with a 39-19 overall record and made its 19th-straight NCAA appearance and fourth-straight Super Regional.
