SEATTLE - It was the final regular season home game of 2012 Sunday afternoon as UW honored four very special student-athletes following the game. Jenna Clifton, Kimi Pohlman, Taylor Smith and Nikia Williams all played in their final game as a Husky at Husky Softball Stadium.
No. 11/13 UW rallied back but in the end No. 3/2 ASU took game three, 5-4 victory to take the series. UW is now 36-14 overall and 7-13 in Pac-12 play. ASU is 42-5, 14-2.
ASU took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first off of UW starter Kaitlin Inglesby (18-9). Alix Johnson walked and scored on a double down the right field line by Annie Lockwood. Lockwood scored from third on a sac fly to right by Haley Steele. Amber Freeman drove in the third run on a bloop single to right.
UW fought back to get within one in the bottom half of the inning as sophomore Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) and Williams (Mission Viejo, Calif.) walked with two outs. Hayward stole second and advance to third on wild pitch by ASU starter Dallas Escobedo (16-4). Junior Shawna Wright (Lancaster, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases for freshman Kylee Lahners. The Laguna Hills, Calif., native singled up the middle as two runs scored.
The Sun Devils got a run back in the top of the second as Bailey Wigness walked and scored on a double to the left field wall by Katelyn Boyd. After a walk to Johnson, Inglesby was pulled and sophomore Bryana Walker (La Quinta, Calif.) came in to pitch. Lockwood walked to load the bases with no outs but Walker got two-straight pop ups for two quick outs and struck out Freeman to get out of the jam.
Williams nearly tied the game in the third with a deep ball to the warning track in left field with Inglesby on base.
ASU's final run came in the top of the fifth as Steele scored on a slow infield hit.
Wright hit her fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to left field leading off the sixth to get within two.
Pohlman hit a leadoff single in the seventh. With two outs, Williams walked with as Wright was the winning run at home plate. Wright singled up the middle as Pohlman scored to get within one but ASU would get the final out to seal the victory.
UW will play its final regular season Pac-12 series at Stanford next weekend. The NCAA Selection Show is two weeks from today.
