April 27, 2012
SEATTLE - No. 11/13 UW fell in a tough game one vs. No. 3/2 Arizona State Friday night at Husky Softball Stadium. UW falls to 36-12 overall and 7-11 in Pac-12 play with the 18-1 loss in five innings. ASU improves to 40-5, 12-2.
Freshman Kasey Stanchek (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) got the start in the circle for UW. She struggled in the first inning walking the first two batters but got the next two to pop up and a ground out to end the inning. Stanchek would allow eight runs on eight hits in 2.2 innings, falling to 9-2 on the year.
Sophomore Whitney Jones (Upland, Calif.) made her first appearance of the year in the circle after going 5-0 in 2011. In this game, she allowed nine earned runs on five hits in 2.1 innings.
The first hit of the game for either team was a single up the middle by Sam Parlich to lead off the second for ASU. After two sac bunts, a bloop single to left by Bailey Wigness drove in the game's first run. Katelyn Boyd hit a two-run home run to right field for the winning runs. Alix Johnson followed with a solo shot deep in the center field bleachers.
ASU tacked on four more in the third to go up 8-0 after three innings.
Senior Kimi Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.) was the first Husky base runner in the fourth, reaching on an error by the second baseman. Pohlman reached second on a sac bunt by sophomore Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) and scored on a single up the middle by sophomore Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.) to possibly break-up the run-rule.
The Sun Devils finished the game in the top of the fifth with 10 runs, including a three-run home run by Annie Lockwood and a grand slam by Boyd.
Dallas Escobedo improved to 15-4 in the circle for ASU, allowing just one run, unearned, on one hit in the complete game.
