Huskies Split with No. 12 Stanford

April 24, 1999

PALO ALTO, Calif.--The fifth-ranked Washington softball team split its seventh Pac-10 doubleheader of the season and its second of the year against Stanford on Saturday, both games decided by one run. UW took the opener, 3-2, before falling 4-3 in the second game. The Huskies are 35-12 overall and 8-7 in the Pac-10.

In the first game, Washington fell behind 2-0 in the bottom of the second, when Stanford got two runs off three hits. But despite four more hits, the Cardinal did not cross the plate again.

After two hits in the first five innings for UW, the Huskies put together a rally in the sixth that scored three runs off four hits. Two of those runs came with two outs. Junior Rosie Leutzinger led off with a double to left field, and sophomore Kelly Hauxhurst took first on an error. A single by senior Becky Newbry advanced both runners, putting Leutzinger in position to score off a sacrifice fly by junior Jennifer Spediacci. Junior Melissa Downs walked, and sophomore Christie Rosenblad singled Hauxhurst home before junior Jamie Graves singled Hauxhurst home.

Graves pitched struck out two in the win, throwing six innings before Spediacci relieved her for her first save of the season.

In the second outing, one of the two teams scored in the first four innings, with the Cardinal putting two across in the first and third and UW scoring one each in the second and fourth. Stanford's first two runs came off a homer, a double and a single before Spediacci put one over the left field fence in the second frame.

SU came back with two more off two errors and no hits in the third. Spediacci scored again in the fourth after walking, moving to second on a sacrifice by Downs and a double by freshman Jenn Sumsky.

The Huskies rallied again, this time in the seventh inning. Hauxhurst, sophomore Kim DePaul and Spediacci each singled, and a Downs sacrifice fly brought Hauxhurst home, but the rally ended one run short.

Spediacci went the distance, striking out six and allowing four hits.
